we had to unclog some drains in our house and Wally World sells drain cleaner for 99c a bottle compared to other store brand's versions that are upwards of $5 - $10...hard to say no to stuff like that. And it works well, too.

Especially their store brand "Equate" items...usually way cheaper than the same stuff at any other store and works just as well I've found.

I usually just wait until I need a bunch of little things like that and do it in one monthly trip there, or less.

Sociology is hardly important for an Industrial Engineering degree, yet somehow required to graduate. Interestingly enough, this was part of the topic of my paper. Why are classes that have nothing to do with a specific major, required to graduate?

My university has "general education" classes that everyone has to take no matter what major. Its a pretty lengthy list of classes that cover the beginning of almost every subject. Luckily I was able to get credit for most of them from my high school dual enrollment classes (classes taken through community college but in my high school)

Yeah, I took a few of those. But that was before I decided on a major. So it was time wasted as I dont need those credits now. Except my Tig welding class. Ive made a few bucks with that knowledge.

It's like that for any college or university that offers an "accredited" degree, meaning a degree recognized by other schools across the country or rest of the world as being legit. I went to a school right after community college for a few years that was a private "college" offering a degree that was not accredited by any major organization, and when I went to transfer to a better school (long story) the school I transferred to wouldn't accept any of the credits from the previous one. Shit sucked.

Anyway, part of the accreditation I believe is making courses mandatory that are considered necessary for higher education in general, even if some of them don't relate to your area of study.

...one way to get around that is to go to a trade school instead, where you can study and learn exactly what you want your trade to be in. But then you aren't getting a degree, rather you get a certificate. But these days, trade schools are becoming more and more appealing, even to employers of white collar jobs.

More and more companies are looking for people with degrees though, doesn’t matter what it’s jn as long as you have one.

My uncle recently went back to school for his bachelors degree in business because he can’t move up any farther in the company with it.

    He works In the oilfield.

yeah unfortunately it really depends on the company or corporation. A lot of corporations want people with Masters degrees nowadays in Business, Management, Communications, etc. Bachelor's degrees don't even hold half the weight that they used to anymore.

I think part of that has to do with the fact that when you start studying for your Masters, you're taking more classes that are directly related to your field of study unlike undergraduate where you're taking a few of those classes plus a few that aren't exactly related.

True, another uncle is pretty much over his whole “district” with no secondary education, but he’s worked there for 20+ years, also oil field.

My father has been with Farmer's Insurance Group his entire career, 30+ years. He worked his way to pretty high up the corporate ladder with the company, and makes great money at it. But he "only" has a Bachelor's in Communications. He's told me numerous times that in this day and age, he never would have gotten halfway as far as he has if he had started now. They only promote people up to his level nowadays that have specific Masters degrees in the field.

Oh, and he's being forced into early retirement because the company wants to hire someone to do his job fresh out of a graduate program and pay them half his salary. Such is the world we live in now

I’m going a BS will be enough for awhile, and if a masters is eventually needed my work will hopefully fund it.

Thankfull my field is still accepting associates in most starting positions. I plan on working for awhile off that while I complete a 4 year online. Thankfully ECU has a highly recognized online program for Industrial Engineering thats set up for people who work. It may take more than 2 years, but Im down with that.
