I'm trying to find companies that make nice looking and sleek roof racks for first gens. I need them...

    I have the Yakimas
Bolted them to the camper top with reinforcing washers, etc. underneath
Really strong and the carriers come off in a few seconds.
You can get them cheap used on ebay.
I just painted galvanized pipe instead of buying their expensive bars

Can't say it didn't look a little iffy, but I'm sure after mounting all those 2nd and 3rd gen racks they have a good idea of what the sheet metal in the roofs can handle for a rack system. That said, there was a good long time that I considered making this:

    https://www.tacomaworld.com/threads...rail-rig-and-bs.159436/page-629#post-13103925

I'll do something I'm sure - buy or build, but it's not anytime soon on my project list...

Honestly what it looks like to me is they took the exact same rack from the 2nd gen and tried to adapt it to the narrower body of the 1st gens.

IMO, they should either make the rack narrower to fit with the body width, or at least use a cross bar over the mount locations so you don't have that torsion load on the sheet metal. Even with that gusset on the bracket, the metal directly above it can still twist and flex.

Here's my rack. Roya (extended) basket on 3rd gen T4R rails. Low profile.

Now looking at it again, I see what you're saying - Blackdawg's looked like where I would probably mount the rails

You could install a pair of T-slot tracks on both roofs then use those for mounting whatever.

Yeah, that's probably the strongest way to do it; make a rail system that disperses the load across a wide area of the sheet metal. That's the way the factory racks do it.

I like blackdog's idea, I just may go that route if I ever end up racking it.

I know RackAttack uses the tracks on the sheet metal for that reason(spreading the load). Since its first gen you don't have the ditch channels or you could install Rhino ditch tracks.

Both are Stock - built correct from the start.
Definetly. But, might be ok on a topper

Being fiberglass, I think on a topper would be even worse because of the propensity to crack.

I kinda want something that looks like this. I found the guys here on twcoma world earlier this year..he built it himself and has since sold it. I like the way he didnt drill into the top but instead attached it the way you attach yakima racks. Anyone know.who could custom build this for me? 383e04c8643b1b718616bbdf8b22ad46.jpg roofrack_detail7_e2b2ad2bd20fd50052999ba3cf3a6d844f05c546.jpg

A lot of work went into that. I doubt it could be replicated affordably. If drilling is off the table then look at a basket that is held by door frame clips. I understand the reluctance for drilling but I'd still just drop the headliner, install roof tracks and be done with it.
