If you don't want this crap get an 05-08. I personally hate that its standard equipment and not optional.

Vehicle Stability Control (VSC) and Traction Control (TRAC). An Automatic Limited-slip Differential (Auto-LSD), which uses brake intervention to help reduce tire slippage at the rear wheels, is standard on all Tacoma models.

There were many improvements in the 2009 year. There is nothing inherently wrong with 2009-2010.

See here for what was new in the 2009 models

I love my 2010. I'm sure you will get an argument for pre 2009 and one that supports 2009-2010. I say go with your gut, take hard look at what you need from your truck and make an informed decision.

I personally think the '09 and forward are much improved, from a daily drivability standpoint. All the extra safety equipment (side airbags, traction systems) plus the nice extras like the AUX input and backup camera, to me, make it worth it. Maybe hardcore wheelers or just people who want "old school" don't like it, but to me '09 and up was the only option.

Seriously, as a past owner of a 2001 and a 2005... My 2010 with A-TRAC, TRAC, etc. knocks the socks off all previous Tacomas when it comes to 4WD traction and drivability. The best thing Toyota did was give us A-TRAC and TRAC on the Off Road 4WDs!!!

2009's are made out of cardboard. JK, I love mine, and as stated above everything that has been added to them has been a major step up. I got my 09 specifically for the side curtain air bags, if I ever need them I want them. Unfortunately I have a sport (long bed) so I dont have atrac, but Ive seen it in action and is is amazing! In 2012 I will be sure my next tacoma has it!

I can not imagine that anyone would want a pre-'09 Tacoma over a new one.

I waited and bought my '09 in October 2008 because of all the upgrades on the '09. I have put 40,000 miles on it since then primarily high speed on the interstate. I personally like having six airbags around me because if I do get in an accident it will probably be at high speed. I like the traction control because I have proven it keeps you straight in very slick conditions. I like the traction control-based LSD becasue it lets me pull my boat out of a canal on a sand ramp.

The only thing I do not like and totally wished had been left alone is the design of the rear seats in the Access Cab. They took a readily usable space and totally screwed it up. I have, like several others, constructed a platform that covers the rear seats so my dogs have someplace to sit.

I would have to say that, especially stock, yes, the '09+ have better offroad ability with the above mentioned systems (A-TRAC, TRAC).

I hit black ice going 70mph and VSC saved my behind in Feb. I really thought "this is it, this is how I'm going to die," but VSC did it magic and got me back on the road without much effort from my part. I know these old-school types are going to say a skilled driver could've saved himself in this situation too. Yes, if they had a system installed so that they can break each wheel individually and and move at the speed of sound.

The way I see it, the 2009 Tacoma already paid for itself. :)

Except for the auto LSD these safety features are pretty much standard on all new vehicles. I blame government intervention.

Toyota calls it the Star Safety System and says it is now standard on all Toyotas. That would be TRAC and VSC... I don't know if the AUTO LSD is available in all models... I would think so, as getting out of a snow bank would be a safety issue, and AUTO LSD is a posi traction effect giving both rear tires max. torque potential.

Absolutely, you should read my posts on the A-TRAC and my reports after taking my 2010 to the desert and Baja.

Because the truck has A-TRAC, it has a hydraulic brake booster and that makes the other traction features work better than the non-A-TRAC Tacomas: TRAC in H4 and AUTO LSD in H2.

I can compare the 2010 to the 2005 and 2001 Tacomas because I had those before... all 4WD and all Off Road TRDs.

The pre-09 Off Road Tacomas had open differentials with an e-locker on the rear. I used the rear locker many times for steep climbing in poor traction situations. However, it only works while in low range, and I do most of my four wheeling in deep sand... low range will only bury you deeper... You do get stuck in high range, too... so the secret to deep sand driving to to deflate the tires about 50% (to 15 psi)... more if needed, as there are many kinds of sand.

My 2010, drove onto the beach in Baja (where I would need to deflate) but never slowed down or got stuck, requiring deflation. I was in H4, with the TRAC on (normal mode)... and just drove and stopped and drove again.

Just in case it wasn't some freak condition allowing me to drive the beach with such ease, I turned OFF the TRAC (VSC OFF MODE) by holding the VSC button down for several seconds while stopped... this makes the Tacoma just like my earlier ones with open differentials.

I began to drive (in H4) and soon my Tacoma dug in, as my other trucks would have with air at 32 psi. I got it good and stuck... which allowed me to test the other gem of the '09 and newer Off Road 4WDs, the A-TRAC!

Without letting any air out, or even clearing away the sand from the tires, I turned on A-TRAC (only works in L4)... gave it some gas... the truck made the A-TRAC noises shook a bit and drove itself right out of the stuck. I went back into H4, but with TRAC on and continued to drive about.

I have been singing the praises of the TRAC and A-TRAC ever since... Last month going to Mision Santa Maria, the A-TRAC proved itself agian... I never needed to use the rear locker as I had on previous trips to Santa Maria mission in my other Tacomas.
