What have you done to your Tacoma today? 1st Gen Edition

Full front brake change (calipers, pads, rotors) and bleed over the weekend. Driver caliper had clear signs of a piston or two being seized up, inside of the rotor had a ring of rust about a half inch wide. I thought for sure this was the friction/ drag I was feeling and while it has definitely improved, I still feel some very slight drag at low speeds/ have some minor vibration. Feel it in the gas pedal more than anywhere else, sounds similar to @lukester78.

Wired my Light Bar, and Pods into a relay to control maunally or with the high beams.

 

Sanded and.painted push bar. Now it is drying.

 

I hate groundskeepers who do half ass jobs.

A step. I borrowed the design from addicted offroad. It also absorbs tree impacts before it hits my tailgate too, I guess.

 

Well I spent a whole hour looking for that stupid leak with no luck. I checked the freeze plugs and they seem clean with no sign of leaking. I checked behind the air intake manifold next to the heater core lines and nothing. The leak is so slow that it’s crusting over before it even drips. It’s not a continuous leak, but I’m SOL at the moment. Probably just keep an eye on it and hopefully it doesn’t get worse.

 

I got a steel bumper so I CAN back into trees.

 

I used to back up into trees and wooden poles when parking in a camp sites. And I have just chrome bumper. I worked well till one day when two things happened at the same time:
1. I misses that darn pole and hit it with my rear fender just in front of the bumper,
2. It was not wooden pole, but concrete painted in brown.

The scar is for this day so my wife can point at it and laugh at me every time I complain at her driving.

Today was flush the power steering pump day. Followed Timmy the Toolman's video (the one where you pump out the system while adding fluid, and then pull the reservoir to clean the screen filter. It seemed that I could not keep up with the flow rate of the pump return line as I was adding fluid, and it gave the low fluid whine. This necessitated stopping and starting a couple of different times, but eventually, I got to clean fluid coming out of the return. Then pulled and cleaned the reservoir. Lots of brake-clean, and some pretty nasty black gunk was flushed out. Then started to use the air hose, on low pressure, to dry the brake-clean. After shooting air up through from the bottom, this piece of what I think is the corner of a paper towel was blown up to the cap opening. It wasn't anything that I was using, but it may have well been why I had trouble with getting fluid in fast enough. Is there any logical reason that the PO might have inserted this in the reservoir? I've never had it apart, and I'm not even sure that I have ever needed to add fluid. I'm fairly confident it isn't part of the filter, as I could not see any more material in the there, and it is obviously very oddly shaped to fit in a round reservoir. Any thoughts guys???

 

Going to be installing a transmission cooler this week. A340F transmission. thinking of just bypassing the radiator all together and using the transmission cooler only. Any thoughts on this? not in cold weather much. Also, can anyone let me know which line is the feed and which is the return on the transmission?

 

Return line is the one coming from the driver side of the radiator. Hope that helps.

Output line from the transmission should be the one that has the temp sensor on top of the exit port.

 

So I'm in need of skid plate bolts.
Is the correct size m8 1.25 15mm?

 

you could bypass it all together. It does help get the oil up to temperature faster. But certainly not needed if you aren't in a cold climate.

 

Thanks. I live in southern California so not in any cold temps. Coldest ill be in would be when winter camping and that's prob into the low 30s maybe teens if I end up in parts of Utah. so far coldest has been Bryce in December and I think that was 3F at night. but that was only once. I am just looking to avoid the strawberry milkshake if possible.
