^^^Second this!! Over the years, I have owned three, two currently, including my '04 DC, and one that has been retired. '01 CRV, rear ended, had to pound out floor of trunk, new bumper cover, and paint work. My wife drove it over 140,000 miles, 'til it burned a valve. 2012 Honda Odyssey, rear ended, new bumper cover, new tailgate, body work to one rear quarter panel. Over 50,000 miles and going great. My '04 DC was purchased after PO had made repairs. Sideswipe damage all down one side. This one, I spent the better part of a couple of hours of examining. They had replaced front fender, bumper, grill, head light, windshield and major body work to doors and bed. Paid about half what the same vehicle was going for on the lots, have now driven it for almost 120,000 miles, over 13 years. No regrets. Is it for everyone? Hell no!! Why? Not everyone can do repairs/painting. Salvage title kills resale value until the vehicle is nearing the end of its useful life. You have to be willing to drive them for many, many miles/years. In New York, it is a several month process to get a title, after making repairs. It requires a special inspection, and you must show receipts for any replaced parts. Will I do it again? Likely!! But hopefully not for a long time, as I love my 1st gen!!!

I’m thinking about getting a DIY ghost raptor grille kit from homertaco. What do y’all think about it? One concern I have is how I would open the hood. Also, should I buy a spare grille or risk messing up my current one?

No clue how you can use the hood... but people have figured it out. And I would get an aftermarket grill. Why risk ruining the expensive oem one

I was thinking from a local junk yard or a $50 one from eBay etc.

Wait, how do people open the hood now? Through the grill?

There’s a latch that you pull up on that’s to the right of the emblem and behind the grille.

Or do you mean 2nd and 3rd gens?

I must be doing it wrong.

I pull the latch in the cab, lift the hood up a little and then push that latch

Maybe I’ll have to try that on my truck... then it’s just one more reason to get the new grille.

It should be like 1 pillar over from the emblem and in the top row of the grille and you have to curl your fingers up to feel it. I can’t rememeber the exact spot so I just stick my hand in all the grids and find the right one eventually.

The release cable from inside the cab stops working for some people, fairly common on 1st gens...cable gets stretch out or loses tension somehow over time.
