Thought I was getting OEM cover...

Hello All.
We picked up our Taco about 2 weeks ago. Absolutely the coolest vehicle we have ever owned (well, leasing it for now...)!! My wife Annemarie loved the look of the OEM tri-fold hard cover and I thought that is what we were getting installed by the dealer. Turns out they installed an Extang Encore I believe... Seems like a nice cover but I thought we were getting OEM. I told them I could've bought an after market cover but they assured me this cover is better than OEM.
They were showing us our installed cover and imagine our surprise when they opened the tail gate and we saw it!!.... They drilled holes in the bed of our brand new, multi tens of thousands of dollars, Off Road TRD Taco!!! I thought Annemarie was going to drop on the floor with a heart attack! I don't think I wouldve drilled the holes in the bed of our truck if I installed it. Please tell me there are others out there drilling holes in the beds of their trucks to exit the drain tubes...

Completely normal to drill holes. If you didn't then all the water run off would end up in the bed. Don't worry about it, enjoy the truck!

 

Seems they did a Bait n Switch on you,I would be pissed.

 

What holes? There are (three? Have not seen mine for awhile due to a platform) stock ones in front already, more than those?

Iv'e got the backlfip, and it uses larger OD tubes in each corner that the cover rails drain into. Just a couple holes in the corners of the bed.

 

The bed is fiberglass so no worries about rust. However, rest assured the dealer did make more money off of the after market bed cover.

 

There was a guy on here that just got one of these installed and they nicked his gas filler tube with the drill bit while drilling out those holes in the bed.

 

a dealer did this when I bought my first AC tacoma. They ensured me that it would be the OEM and I was very clear that is what I expected to be installed (I didn't know then that they didn't make them for the LB), but it turned out to be the extang one. A couple of other issues led to me making them take the truck back and return my down payment and trade in.

 

The dealership really should have explained what they were doing. But... none of them really do that well. It's always rush rush rush & all part of the show

There is no OEM cover.

Its a Tonneau cover, that is sometimes installed on factory Toyotas.

You have to drill holes for the installation of a lot of covers.

It helps to research what cover you are getting so you know what to expect.

 

I think he's talking about the OEM one that actually says Tacoma on it. They can't be ordered through parts dept & has to come on a new truck as built

 

The dealer could of done a better job communicating this to you, but in the end you're getting a better cover. After a lot of research, I ended up getting an Encore and am very happy with it. Each cover has its pros and cons, but what sold me on the Encore is that literally takes 1 minute to remove without tools and can be opened from the front. Also, the Encore works better with my power locking tailgate because it doesn't have an external lock (at the rear). When the tailgate is locked the bed is secured. To get in all I have to do is unlock the truck.

I drilled the holes in my bed per their instructions. Other than mentally having to get over drilling holes in your new truck, they have caused no problems.

 

You realize those two statements conflict?
OEM means Original Equipment Manufacture. Ie what the factory puts on.

 

The first part of your statement is correct, the second part is not.

OEM is a product made by one company but marketed under another. Toyota does not put their name on the Tonneau but made a deal with their company to add it as an option but it was never marketed as anything but a factory Tonneau.

Just because its added at the factory does not mean its “OEM”. The GoPro mount is another example.

 

Ok now I see where you are coming from.
The cover is OEM’d by Toyota. That’s where the term really comes from. Ie I want to buy the exact same part the factory use but I don’t want to pay their markup, so who makes it for the factory? Hence the term who is the OEM of that part. It’s just become synonymous with meaning “the part the factory use” these days.

 

Welcome to TW, now don't get all caught up in mods for your truck, and do your research before asking questions on here or the brothers will give it to you...lol, enjoy the truck.

 

OEM... in my opinion really means nothing.

You can be a company selling an OEM part but were never the manufacturer that made the product put on at the factory. All the OEM means is you are selling a product equivilent in appearance/design to the original equipment.

OEMs after the first 1-2 years are typically knock offs.

It really is just a term that means “advertising as manufacturer” but its not. There is no legal requirement they are the manufacturer of the original factory part or any standards their product has to meet to be a quality like the original.

 

I wouldn't be worried about it. If you wanted a different one I would go back.. but in my opinion you got the better one and I'd take it in a heartbeat. Bed extenders also have to be drilled in, so just a heads up in case you're looking at those too.

It's all about getting what you want in the end. Just get the one you'd rather have and definitely enjoy the Taco! Welcome.
