The "2.7" What a great engine!

I just got a 2001 Reg Cab Sr5 with the 2.7 and manual. Wow, what an engine! I can't believe the pull this thing has (with 124k miles!); I had this engine in my old 98 but with the auto and it was terrible. But the manual releases all of the power of the engine. Not to mention, it sounds great too. My brother in law has a 2003 with the 3.4 and five speed and it really doesn't feel like it has that much more pull that the 2.7. It goes to show how good the 2.7 really is. Really happy with my "new" truck and glad I got the 2.7...great forum by the way!

gotta love the 2.7 everybody thinks a 4 cylinder is slow but this one aint!

 

Got the 2.7 in my 96. Absolutely love it, I've got about 235k on it and it still runs and drive close to what it did when my Dad bought it new in 1996 with 4 miles on it. It was worth the 4500 I paid for it.

After a few upgrades along the way, helped everything out. Very peppy for a 4 cylinder, that's for sure.

I agree the V6 does not seem to pull much more then the 2.7 at lower speeds. Once you get up to freeway speeds that's where you notice the V6 and when you pass a vehicle. I really do not need to down shift with the V6.

 

I had the 2.7 in my old 96 and I thought it was great (ran 32s too), at least until I bought my 01 with a V6. I disagree with OP... V6 has much more pull at any speed.

Not to take away from the 3RZ...great engine. But I like my new taco better. I am also getting 22 with the V6 as opposed to 18 with the 4cyl.

 

I totally agree. Have driven plenty of 2.7's and they don't pull no where close to what the 3.4 pulls. no comparison whatsoever. I would slaughter a 2.7 in any kind match with the 3.4. Yes the 2.7 is a VERY VERY VERY snappy engine but it still lacks greatly compared to the 3.4 in torque and horses. In terms of reliability, the 2.7 is proven, but my 3.4 has given me ZERO problems in addition. 165,000 on mine and still holding strong as a bull. Only thing done to it was a clutch and front end steering components. Getting off of the reliability factor, sorry for getting off track, but it's still no comparison in engine capabilities between the two.

 

I've got a 3.4 auto but this makes me want to try driving a 2.7 manual. I drove a 4cyl auto and thought it was terrible. Living in Hawaii I regularly have to do a lot of up and down hills and didn't even look for a 4.

 

try the manual 3.4..... YOU'LL ABSOLUTELY FALL IN LOVE!!!!!!!

 

The 2.7 with the auto is a dog...I had that in my 98 and it was terrible. And yes, the 3.4 obviously pulls a bit harder; what I'm saying is there isn't as much of a difference as I thought there would be. My brother has the 3.4 and I've driven his truck plenty. The difference between the two is that the V6 pulls harder in the upper gears. I used to have a 2007 frontier with the 4.0 V6 (261 HP/281 TQ) and that thing would pull! Sold it due to the terrible gas mileage and sick of the huge turning radius.

Its all great until you get the cold knock problem!

 

I have the 2.7 liter engine on my 2001 Tacoma, and love it. It still moves uphill, even with 33's.

 

ive posted this before but Ill post it again. this is my manual 2.7 towing a 6500lb Avanti. It aint much slope but just look at the ease..

 

Yes. Yes you will. Very good acceleration 40-60 in 3rd. I can be cruising in 4th and downshift to pass and just blow by.

Yup. Had that on mine I believe. Went away after the engine warmed up and didn't seem to cause any problems so I never did anything about it.

 

yep,mine has the piston slap cold knock trouble in my 2004..at the time it was out of powertrain warranty by 4 months...Toyota says its normal for this engine to knock cold...only problem cold is now getting to be about 70 degrees..

 

That is what mine is doing now. It used to be when cold now it just has to be lukecold! Not sure how I am going to sell it? Sounds terrible like a no oil condition. I have 140k on mine how many on yours?

 

I had a hair over 150k. Didn't really matter how warm it was outside, it just kinda did it when I started the engine up.

 

To bad they don't put a 4cyl in the DC....
