I've never done the hammers but a quick look on trails offroad shows the ratings from 7-10. I can run 7s now in a relatively stock Tacoma so....

While I get what you're saying, sort of, I would bet you there would be more new Jeep owners that would try it than there would be tacoma owners. They're different vehicles, for different intended uses by those intending to truly use them.

With doors off it's much easier to pick your line on a rocky sluice

I don't know what trails off road's rating system is based on, but I've been on or wheeled most of the trails in the hammers, and all but the most hardcore built tacomas wouldn't make it through much of anything. If it's still on IFS, it's likely not making it through much.

There is no pseudoscience when it comes to approach/departure angles. There is no pseudoscience when it comes to electronic gizmos failing over mechanical. KoH vehicles are constantly adapting to that particular race, which means they need to find the balance of rock crawler and wide open desert running.

All this on top of the fact that most people are much less likely to start hacking up a brand new vehicle just to make it comparable to another new vehicle that is in the same price range, which will still retain its factory warrantee.

A relatively stock Tacoma can get you around to spectate at the hammers, but there is very few of the popular spots that you can participate.

I feel like I'm trying to convince a flat earther that the Earth is actually round.

My argument isn't a comparison between stock vehicles or whether or not MOST peoole will cut up a new truck. Simply put, a Tacoma with the right work (about 15k) will hang out with a Jeep all day.

Show me a new Rubicon (4door) that costs the same as a new Tacoma. The Rubicon .4 doors are about 40k to start. Tacoma OR is about 35. Even if they were the same price that still has no bearing on my argument.

Approach angles aren't much if a factor with the right bumper. Departure angle can get you hung up but get a high clearance bumper and you'll rarely have issues.

@Taconator_ , how far you planning on taking your rock crawling ?

Not to make your own thread about you, or to put this in terms of your original post or anything? Haha

    Dude, this is hilarious...

So you're saying if you add 15k to a tacoma, it will hang with a stock jeep? Ya, ok, agreed there. But....why would you?

If you want to bring a 4 door into the argument, that changes it a little, but not much. You brought up 15k in work, so...i'm talking about price...

You cant put a bumper on and fix approach angle with a tacoma, you can improve it though. And if you think just getting a high clearance bumper negates any departure angle issues, then...dang. Dunno what to say.

I think your idea of rock crawling is different than mine.

I'll try to upload some pics when i get home. I'm at work now, but yes i rock crawl my almost bone stock taco. Im not talking Claw hammer at KOTH type shit, but yes moderate difficulty heavy rockbed trails sure. You have to be more mindful of the approach and departure angles in comparison to the jeeps. But if you have the factory e locker you can go most places most jeep guys will take their jeeps. Many jeeps are much more capable than the owners are comfortable taking them. I've done various trails with moderate difficulty at almost stock. Ive got Bilstein 5100's with a 1/4" spacer on front. and the Icon 1.5" AAL kit in the rear with LT265/75 R16 tires. With rock sliders and a t-case skid. I typically hit every obstacle on the back way to crown king here in AZ, the one that ate my rear bumper was Payette draw up in Payson which was a super fun trail. Also wheeled up klondike bluffs in Moab. If you have crawl control and MTS you will suprise people on where you can find traction when others cant. Its pretty much cheating, but hey if its there I'll use it as a last resort

I kind of agree, only in that the vast majority of Jeep owners are not offroaders anymore. I'm surprised to see a lot of soccer moms driving them now. I have two friends with JKs and they have no interest in offroading them or modifying them, they just like the idea of owning a Jeep. I do agree more Jeep owners would try it over Tacomas.

I've got less than 10k in this, and it hurts high dollar rigs feelings on a regular basis, buggies, jeeps, whatever, but jeeps especially I also have a 2rz under the hood.

I also think its a bit funny like that this 3rd gen oriented thread has been de-railed by all these 80s toyota P/U and early 1st gen posts.
