to me thats really pushing a tacoma.. almost 5000 pounds unloaded. you will be surprised as to how fast you add weight to those things.. you'll be close to max towing in no time.

 

Too much for a Tacoma to safely handle.

I'm pulling a Coachmen 204RD that comes in at 24' total length and a dry weight of 4k and gvwr of 6400. That is the most I would feel comfortable with. I couldn't imagine how bad it could get adding a thousand pounds.

 

Its okay. It meets the rating. Everyone on here has told him he can do it so when the wind flips the out of it he can come back and cry about it.

I’ve come to the conclusion I can’t pull anything but a pop up. Forget it. I’ll stick with a tent.

 

You pull with a 3rd gen - Manual or Auto? How does she feel pulling a 24' (does it ever feel like it's too much)? What hitch are you using? Anti-sway? Where do you pull? (Flat, Mountains, etc.?) TIA - looking to buy a Travel trailer to pull with my 6 Speed 3rd Gen. likely through The Smokies. Thanks!

 

We tow a 4000lb dry weight camper. I travel around 105kph at about 2500rpm in 5th gear with confidence. Gearing down on the hills of course. Looking forward to ovTune for some acceleration power but the stock tune othwise does fine.

Mpgs? Dont ask me about mpgs. But I will say that I never tow without a jerry can.

 

The Tacoma is the M6. I purposely chose the manual so I didn't have to deal with trans temps and gear hunting. I use the equalizer WD hitch with sway control. I just bought the trailer in the fall and have only towed it 400 miles but it towed very well.

 

I don't think that's the issue. The issue is all these weights are DRY and not including people, dogs, food, gas, bikes, kayaks, generators, etc. That all adds up quickly. And 6400 lbs is the limit. 5500 RPM is the "limit" of the motor. Does that mean you should be driving around like that for very long? Putting any truck at it's towing limit, whether it's a Ram 3500 Dually or our Tacos, isn't smart.

 

I agree with sailtowery about excessive wear when towing right at the upper limit long term.

Also, RV dry weights very rarely include 'options' on the camper. Things like batteries, microwaves, sometime the air conditioner are all left out of that number. Most RV's are a couple hundred pounds over the 'dry weight' when you drive them off the lot. Then anything you add inside (dishes, toiletries, food, water in the tank, bedding, etc.) adds up quickly on top of that.

I think your Tacoma could pull that camper just fine. But you'd have to accept that it won't be fast (which towing a camper shouldn't be anyway), and it might mean some shortened life on some parts of the truck.

 

Available tow capacity is reduced when adding weight to to the tow vehicle. A family of 4 at 150lbs each reduces your towing capacity by 600lbs minimum.
