Unfortunately at 20, I cannot afford to have two trucks, and I don’t do payments - Cash or bust in my opinion.

I would love to have both but there would be no reason - Would’ve been nice in your case!

A "mechanic" looking over your truck really won't tell you anything. They put it on a rack, check it out with a flashlight, drive, that's about it. You can do that at home.

The only way you will at minimum "fully check out" your truck, is drain and inspect didiffencial oil for metal, pull lower oil pan and inspect for metal or plastic pieces from tenstions/guides, etc, pull spark plugs and run compression test and scope cylinders, oil pressure test, and check out color of transmission fluid. If it runs good, U-joints look good, no ticks, no dings, no vibrations, no stopping issues, smooth idle, no swooshing water sounds on cold start, oil looks good and doesn't reek of gasoline... Your good, is what a "mechanic" will tell you for a couple hours labor time.

Mechanics don't do actual work for free :)

If you haven't noticed any problems, get a flashlight craw under (I prefer in the dark so you only concentrate on what you see in the beam of the flashlight) and go over it inch by inch.

    Just my $0.02 worth...

My humble opinion - If you are planning on dumping another $13,000 to get into the next truck, why not spend $7,500 on a civic or daily commuter and then the other $7,500 on whatever you want and deck out the truck even more? Or keep it in reserve for potential driveline issues on the truck. I mean with $13,000 you could damn near get anything you wanted.

If You are first owner on the older truck I would keep it as you probably know all it's ticks and characteristics as well as services and how it's been driven. Not sure how well you know the newer trucks. I love my DCSB, my twin brother has DCLB and he wishes he had SB. I could see SB being better off-road, but no idea honestly.

    But your call man lol

I'd agree with this. A replacement engine would run you about half that installed (God forbid), and you could get a nice commuter with the rest to keep the miles down

My mechanic is actually a family friend - We’ve looked over the last 10 cars I’ve had together.

And compression/leakdown tests are my specialty...those damn subarus!

I think the real reason is, at the end of the day, I’m investing money into a truck that will
be over 200k in a few more months.

But all the opinions and comments have me rethinking. Thank you for the opinion, a daily driver would be nice but my commute is very short.

you inherit peoples problems with used. sounds like you dont want to mod yours to the way you want but would like to pay the premium for a modded one?

i personally dont like to inherit projects, i like to make my own --- you know your rig in and out when you do so, the whole point of a rig for me is the journey of learning how to do certain things on it and i can call it my own. Doesnt matter how many miles your rig has, your rig will only run as good as its owner that takes care of it

at the end of the day its your project and $$, if you want 35s but dont want to do the work properly, you can always buy that rig.

I wouldn’t mind a longbed, but I have ran into more issues on switchbacks with the longbed. I like both long and short beds a lot!

    Very true!

Mines already a good amount done. The things coming are where I can’t turn back (rear shock relocation and high clearance). I do know my rig very well, but once I chop it up - I’m stuck with it.

I have had 10 cars and always bought stock and unmodded. Although, if I can get a truck that has been indeed maintained well, with upgrades (strictly suspension) for the same price as a stock one, I would take the upgraded one. All depends though. I may take some time to go look it over and decide from there.

Now, I bought the engine, transmission, t-case and a bunch of other parts from a low miles FJ from a guy building a rock crawler and putting Toyota V8 drivetrain for like $3,000 cash. At a dealership, with (as always an LKQ used engine) it's about $6,000. Lol, before I swapped to the FJ 1GR-FE, ( took approx. 20 hours, 2 people, start to finish, including radiator, hoses, etc.) I priced a new short block 1GR-FE strait from Toyota.... Approx. $19,000, lol!

Man you just answered your own question...

"The things coming are where I can’t turn back (rear shock relocation and high clearance). I do know my rig very well, but once I chop it up - I’m stuck with it"

    So...

Your going to spend an extra $13,000 on a new truck to do exactly that?

Man, you really want to keep your truck, just keep it :)
