Basically i went to change my oil and ended up draining the transmission fluid instead. So what i need to know is how much fluid would've been drained just from the plug alone and does the automatic transmission fluid brand matter? Thanks in advance!

~ 3 quarts. Use another vehicle and get 4 quarts of Toyota WS ATF fluid (as thats whats currently in the trans and i dont typically recommend mixing fluids) You will have to go through the fill level procedure.

All that stated, i really dont get how people mistake the trans drain plug for the engine.... the trans drain plug isnt even UNDER the motor, like not even close by 2 ft!

Might be good if you got the Mod's to move this to the third gen thread or it could get confusing since it looks like your rig is a '17. Just sayin'

well.... he did miss the engine drainplug by a mile.... so posting in the wrong section goes hand in hand :D hahaha

That stated, fill and check procedure on the 3rd gens if im not mistaken is very similar and should need about the same amount of fluid.

Not the first. Wont be the last. As stated above. Get proper Toyota fluid, fill, then follow the check procedure.

    HAHAHA

OP just dont be like the guy that did this exact thing (drain trans instead of engine).... then proceed to fill the radiator with ATF "because it had pink fluid".... i think he also double filled the engine as well.

In my opinion this is an easy mistake to make. Lots of people have done this, I’m honestly surprised it doesn’t happen more often.

OP, you prolly won’t make this mistake again, but maybe think about getting a Fumoto valve so you’ll be able to drain oil with no tools.

Avoid driving the truck until you get the transmission fluid level straight.

Might want to edit your link for a 2017 turd gen tacoma. Don't want OP not to verify the procedure is correct for his truck and beat his head over it.

Dont feel bad,you are about the 100th guy that drained the tranny instead of the oil,
    Oil pan is =Black
    Transmission is =aluminum color

Like I said many times,Toyota needs too put HUGE block letters stating oil or tranny fluid, on the oil pan and Transmission.Uh

But then people would know where the trans pan is and could service their non-servicable transmissions

Nobody was born knowing which pan was the transmission vs. the engine. There are two ways to learn:

RTFM, where you pay before you learn the lesson.

School of hard knocks, where you pay after you learn the lesson. And it usually costs more time and $$.

Take this experience as a teachable moment next time you pick up a wrench and head for your truck, make an informed decision.
