Holes won't matter but damn I'd be pissed if I wanted the OEM cover and they instead put an extang. You can have the extang from a normal supplier for a fraction of the price im sure. It's too late to get the OEM as you can't buy it from parts dept.

Not all covers require drilling. I have a tri-fold Rugged Liner and no drilling required.

    Welcome and nice truck!
I have an oem tonneau. I think I’d rather have the Extang.

hey @PackCon you sound really smart. :cookiemonster:

OP. the extang is a good cover but definitely not OEM. If you're really miffed about being mislead by the dealer, get something in return for missed expectation. Otherwise, the holes in the fiberglass bed are no big deal. Enjoy the new truck!

An alternative method would have been to run the tubes under a bed mat without drilling holes.

Not 100% but does keep the bed dry as the water runs under the mat .

My tri fold goes into the utility rails in the bed, no holdes drilled at all. It's also supported the weight of my dirt bike and 4 wheeler sitting on it without a single issue. Don't remember the brand, but purchased it off a dealer in Connecticut near the Rhode Island border.

Do you know what they charged you? Good point made, they may have charged you $1200 for a $800 cover.

The OEM cover probably has warranty to match, Encore is like 2 or 3 year.

The first thing I do when I get a new truck is drill a few holes in it. Just to get it out of the way. Dealer did you favor, haha.

    Welcome to TW!

When I bought my 2016, it didn't come with a cover. I asked them if they could take one off another truck and put it on mine. They said they couldn't do that. They said it had to stay with the truck as it came from the factory. Something about Toyota had to keep track of how many trucks had the covers on them for EPA reasons. I'm not sure if that's true or not. It could have just been dealer BS. I asked if they could order me an OEM and they said they couldn't.

I ended up going through them for an xtang (I think - the badge fell off after a year). It was completely bolt on with no holes drilled. It mounts to the bed rails. It's nice because I can take it off if I need to haul something big. It doesn't leak even when taking it through a car wash...

Didn't even see that. If it's leased who cares. A lease is like a rental car. Drive it like you stole it and return it with an empty tank.

Doesnt “leased” mean the throttle has been replaced with an on/off switch?

That’s what I was going to say. OEM cover fits like shit, leaks like crazy, and is built poorly.

Glad you dodged a bullet, OP.

Wow!!!... And thank you for all of your thoughts, opinions and reviews of the different covers, installs and experience with dealers. I appreciate it very much. The man at the dealer told me this cover was better than the one from the factory but I was fuzzy at that point from being so upset (a little embarrassed by it now...) on thinking I was getting the factory Toyota cover when I was getting an after market cover. Then, when we saw the holes drilled into it... As far as leasing... It is our method of being able to eventually buy the truck. We couldn't afford the payment to own, well, I guess it is better to say we didn't want to pay that much per month to own out the door. It is a beautiful truck and we do plan on buying it. It has been about 15 years since we bought ourselves a new vehicle and this is quite a vehicle. Thank you again for your help and I look forward to much more in the future.
Can I ask, do you think I need to use 0W20 or can I go with...

    Just kidding. Peace.

I have the OEM cover, just saw a video on the Extang, even if you were to purchase all the parts separately for the OEM since its installed at the factory I believe you would have to drill holes for the OEM anyway, I like the Extang better.

The factory installed one on my 2018 Taco could lay a little flatter. But leak like crazy and poorly built? No.

Reality is that none of these are perfect.
I had a Leer Cap on my 09. Even it leaked some.

There’s an entire thread of guys with leaking covers with panels that don’t sit anywhere near flush or are broken, and show the poor fitment against the tailgate in depth.

They look like a universal cover you’d buy off of eBay for $149 and make your own brackets.

Glad yours is better than most.
