If it makes you feel any better, folks here in Utah would scoop up a chopped and swapped tacoma no problem. May not quite get the sale price you wanted, but the buyers would be there.

SB or LB GFC? Sounds like you already committed to keeping or swapping based on your answer.

A vehicle is nearly always a losing investment. You just have to decide how fast and when to lose money on it. Even worse if you have a loan on it. Use it for transportation and have fun with it, as long as you don't cut yourself short financially or spend more on it than it's worth.

Personally I'd keep it and save money for needed repairs rather than dress it up. There is a badge of pride in keeping and older vehicle running. YMMV.

Well, cars aren't made to be investment instruments. Some just happen to turn into them later on in life i.e. classic Ferraris, Land Cruisers, etc.

    1) Take half of what you were going to spend on the new truck, fix anything that needs updating or fixing.
    2) Put the other half away and save it in case something catastrophic goes wrong, like a mechanical failure
    3) Enjoy not having a truck payment while kicking it in the truck you know and love

Exactly. But even those cars ....over time the expenses of upkeep, maintenance , storage and insurance outweighs the benefit the original owner ever would have.

187k is nothing. Imagine how proud you'll be when it's got 400k and its modified exactly how you want it and still going strong.

Car payments suck, keep your money. I'm making payments, I fricken hate it but I know this thing will last and hold its value

Agreed. Lots of pride in owning and maintaining the same truck.

A lot of folks are accustomed to the idea that they will eventually need a new car at some point. You honestly don’t need a new one. Sure you’ll need to repair your OG Taco at some point, they don’t literally run forever. But that’ll still probably be cheaper than what you put into a new truck that you intend to modify again.

I can understand wanting a new truck, or being bored with your old rig. Nobody will deny the 15 is definitely nicer. But the consumeristic idea that you are gonna NEED one is wrong. Why do you see old people with cars they bought in the 80’s? If you justify your desire for the new rig with, “I’m gonna need one eventually” I’d call that being dishonest with yourself.

But if you’d like one and you can afford it and you’re living within your means, who can blame you for upgrading?

That is what I did with my 2000 Tacoma just did up keep and now it has over 200K on it and has been paid for I just kept putting about the same amount in savings like it was car payment and then used that to do a extra large Down payment along with trade in of a paid off Tundra so payments are like very little and good for the credit.

I started asking myself this same question recently when my 05 needed some repairs. Its paid off, and when the power steering pump went I made the mistake of test driving a 2018 TRD Pro. I cant afford the pro but it got me looking and desiring the nicer interior in the 3rd Gen. I test drove a 2014 DCSB sport that I could afford but the interior is nearly identical to my 05 SR5. I say this because I have already updated the seats to the sport seats, and I replaced my head unit with a factory Bluetooth/navigation unit from a 2014. The 2014 I test drove didn't even have the navigation like I have in my 05, So it would be a slight step backwards. Even at 190K miles and needing some occasional repairs my 05 is still costing me much less than Id spend on a newer Tacoma.

Im tempted to do the front end conversion to a 12-15 front end. For me I think Ill keep my 05 and drive it into the ground. Maybe Ill use the extra money for the house or a sports car for the summer. :)

I would do the swap. 160k miles difference is a long time of peace of mind. Plus, Kings and 35’s for the win.
If I’m not mistaken, you have a gfc in order, are you able to change your mind to make it a short bed one rather than long?
