If you thought 2016 was a bad year to graduate, 2009 was much worse

Oh I know. I graduated with my associates degree the fall of 2008.

Went though over 200 applications just to land one interview. Thankfully that was the only interview I needed to land a job.

There’s not many job options for an engineer or what? You’d think something so smart and that you have to work so hard for would land you a job like nothing. You’d think you’d be turning down offers.

We were talking about the job market conditions back in 2009 when the economy crashed... This is the energy capital of the world and oil was below $40 a barrel..

    Houston and Oil & Gas.

There are lots of options all over it just depends on if you want to move or work in a different industry. O&G pays a lot better than others. But it comes with more risk of being let go.

I’ve watched plenty of ppl attempt to get a engineering degree and failed miserably btw.

If you weren’t a math nerd in high school, don’t even bother. Do what you love and are passionate about.

Interesting. Do engineers outside of the O&G industry still make 6 figures easily ?

Yeah they do just some areas it takes longer than others. A lot also depends on the individual employee or person and how they develop their own careers

Interesting. I had always assumed engineers just make tons of money but I can make 6 figures as just a mechanic at this plant if I was to go full time. So if it could take longer or depends on the individual then I guess people just hype them up on the pay scale cause they stay clean all day and have “power”

    @weldertaco

    This x10000000.
I got spooked by TAMU's engineering workload and went the much more relaxed Liberal Arts route. Most of my veteran buddies are in the college of engineering though and as much as they're suffering now, seeing their job offers (not just oil and gas) compared to mine.... plus the paycheck.... most initial offers for them are 60-80k, mine is a paltry 35k... My job field is a lot smaller and more specialized and 99% of the jobs require masters/doctoral plus x amount of field work. I kinda regret it.

I have been fucking around for the last few semesters and not really studying, but those guys dedicate pretty much every hour of daylight to their studies.

If you're serious about a BS, start at some place like Lone Star or HCC or Blinn (as much as I loathe Blinn) and get as much done there. It will save you A TON of money plus maybe even open your eyes to other career paths.

Even as Phil said, and you've seen with your welding, technical colleges are cheaper and generally offer better paying jobs than just a general BA/BS. My cousin's husband went through lineman's school/training and is KILLING it. Same with process operators/engineers at the refineries (when O&G is good).

Another option - and I know I joked about it the other day - is join the military (reserves would be the route I suggest for you, at least at first). Job training and benefits, plus freedom to do something else as your main hustle.

There is a common sense study that shows the longer you're in school, the less money you make and the more debt you accrue (duh) and the best thing to do is carry 18+ hour semesters to graduate as soon as possible. Higher education is no joke, and the more you apply yourself the better you will do. Conversely, the more you apply yourself the more miserable you are. I've been doing 16+ hour semesters for the past 3 years and am graduating ahead of projection (hopefully) in May. I am burned the fuck out. Non traditional students have it kinda rough - we don't have the privilege of a "no bills/no time requirements/work if you want to" kinda life that the 18 years olds fresh out of high school do.

If you do decide to go back to school, you know we all have your back and support your decision. Holler if you have any questions. It can be a tough decision.

At the end of the day, though... find something you love. I stumbled upon this path because I drunkenly told the veteran's counselor that I wanted to be a mermaid when I grew up.
