I got that wrong... sorry. She has a previous ticket for doing 85 in a 70.

I didn't see the speed limit where the bus stop was. My mistake.

According to the following article, the stretch of road this occured on is 55mph and slows to 45mph on curves before and after.

    https://www.indystar.com/story/news...-school-bus-stop-northern-indiana/1817049002/

Who knows how fast the was going, but the appropriate agencies are investigating and I am sure they’ll pull data from the truck, her phone, marks in the road, etc.

    Terrible accident.

They're already recreating the accident some 100 miles north from what i read. I also read that it's possible that it was a blind curve along with where the bus was positioned.

There's so many things to investigate. I will be checking for updates in the coming days and weeks

In 1988, there was a horrible accident near Carrolton Kentucky, where a drunk driver by the name of Larry Mahoney was driving on the wrong side of I 71 and hit a school bus loaded with a church group returning from Kings Island Amusement Park. 28 people died. That event changed drunk driving laws across the country.

I always thought SOMEONE would be the next "Larry Mahoney" and do something as tragic involving drugs and driving. Never crossed my mind that it very well COULD BE all about texting and driving. Not saying that was THIS case, but it's not out of the realm of possibility.

This happened only a few miles from my home on a road I've traveled hundreds of times. Yes it's near a curve but not a blind corner. In fact the direction she was traveling I doubt she would have reached the corner yet.
It's still dark at 7:30 in the morning but the buses having plenty of lights, and they activate them long before stopping as a warning to oncoming traffic. Its incomprehensible to me how this happened. Had to be distracted driving.

Is it illegal to use a cell phone while driving in Indiana?

Agree, the School had been warned many times before about the bus stopping in that area,so the school will be sued for sure for there complete failure too fix the problem. The State needs too have a divided barrier on that part of the road.

It's certainly illegal if you are using a cell phone while driving over four kids.

What matters is what the lawyer says. If she was on IG or something, and not specifically sending an SMS or MMS text, according to Indiana (which is clearly not a shithole as I am recently informed) law, she's not specifically violating that law. Browsing the internet or making phone calls is not covered by Indiana law, a text message is.

Also, where did "They're already recreating the accident some 100 miles north from what i read." come from? That's in Michigan. In Lake Michigan. Maybe you read that Rochester is 100 miles north of Indy?

Where did her history of an 85 in a 70 ticket come from?

According to INDOT (Indiana Dept of Transportation) there is over 12,000 miles of state and county "highways" within the state. NOT including rural "country roads" Not every curve and hill can be divided. Just not feasible.

TWO things could have prevented this accident. 1. Driver being careful and aware of her surroundings. 2. Parents/Adults watching over their kids. #1 being the most important in this instance.

It is so easy to be critical AFTER the fact. There are hundreds of things that could have prevented this from happening. So...Can anyone say specifically where the NEXT school bus accident will occur? Not to down play what happened, but before we rebuild every inch of every road in every state, there are a number of less involved process' that should be looked at. But first, we need to know EXACTLY what happened and why, THEN go after the cause. Building a bubble for kids to live in is just not going to happen.

Accident reconstruction team is AT THE SCENE OF THE ACCIDENT doing a recreation now according to Indianapolis TV stations. In so far as I know, they don't do that in another location.

I'm with you on the "How do you know" aspect. People more than 1000 miles away seem to have info regarding this incident that local media outlets are unable to confirm. A LOT of "fill in the blank" sort of "creative journalism" I'd venture to say....

I have witnessed a crossing guard being hit in the cross walk in front of a school. The lady was driving an older style jaguar (90's). The sun was in her eyes and she just couldn't see clearly out of the windshield. No kids were hit thank God, but it was a traumatic experience for all involved. I dont know what happened with the lady, but I stayed with the guard until the ambulance and police arrived. Something I hope to never witness again.:(

Thanks. I've never understood the distinction as applicable to being distracted.

When I was in middle school, about 11 or 12 years old, my best friend at the time ran across the street to catch the school bus and was hit by a 22 year old girl going about 15 mph over the speed limit and was killed. Not instantly, but later on that night. Anyhow, I remember being so angry with her when it happened (as much as any 11 year can be I guess) but I also vividly remember seeing her at some point later on and you could just tell by looking at her that her life was forever changed in a way I hope I never can relate to. She actually avoided jail time somehow even though she left the scene (hit and run).

You never asked about driving while distracted. No laws on the books specific to distractions for this drivers age.

It's all good, well...you know what I mean lol. It was just over 20 years ago at this point, and looking back I remember it being a surreal experience, probably because I was still pretty young. Old enough to understand death but not really old enough to understand the permanence.

The one thing I will not forget the most, and what actually still haunts me to this day, is getting to the hospital right as the doctor's told his mother that he didn't make it. I'll never forget that.

Anyway...yeah this story brings back some memories. Sad stuff, very sad. Drive carefully everybody.
