So the time has come for me to start doing my own maintenance and I'm going to attempt my first oil change ever. I've watched a couple videos and think I've got the process down more or less. Do you guys do anything special during oil changes? Any tips or tricks to share for a first timer?

Fresh crush washers? Other than that same shit ive been doing since high school. Get er warm, drain and fill. I have considered some sea foam or something, but ive only changed the oil once on my taco (ive owned it for 13 months, put 3500miles on it lol)

My work truck gets fresh oil every month

    Just 3 tons of fun!!!
It's easy peasy brother. Just dump the oil change the filter and refill actually.

I remove the drain plug and let the oil drain completely and put the plug back in before I move on to anything else... to avoid forgetting to put the plug back in.

Then I remove and replace the oil filter. (not sure how your filter is located, I'll let a fellow 2nd genner chime in if there are any secrets to get to it.

I have a high milage engine so I use Mobile 1 high milage synthetic and use Lucas Oil Stabilizer. You may not need "high milage" specifically, but I always recommend Mobil 1 oil.

I like using K&N oil filters because you can get a wrench on them. I've never had any luck with the stupid strap filter wrenches. (Remember... oil filter wrenches are for getting the filter OFF... You should not need a wrench to tighten the filter on... just get it as tight as you can with your hand... and lube the filter gasket with fresh oil before you put it on, it helps you get the filter tighter by hand.)

And again, I'll let a 2nd genner chime in on this if it applies. The plug in the oil pan should be under the engine (it shouldn't be that far back)... I've seen a couple guys lately (in these forums) drain their transmission thinking they are draining their engine. -- but I think thise were 1st genners.

Does your skids have a hole in it below the drain? Maybe get a fumoto valve to make future oil changes easier by not having to remove it...

It does but they aren't on the truck yet, still haven't even painted them. I saw those in one of the video's I watched. Will those valves stick out past my skid plate once it's on? I hate to catch that thing on a rock or something.

Damn... that dude is fucked up like a soup sandwhich... Can't figure out the right drain plug, then posts about it in the wrong generation forum

Probably shouldn't even own a truck.
