Hmm, let's see. I've got a hood scoop, so 25 there and the TRD Sport decals on both sides, so that's another 10. So 35 right there. What about the badges? No stinking badges?

None yet Still a "base" model..
I think the 2.7 motor is an excellent option, IF one doesn't have to tow or expects neck-snapping acceleration, PLUS keeps an eye on mpg numbers.
For the past 8 yrs, I drove Land Rover Discoveries of the early 2000's, with the 4.6 V8 in them and 12mpg city (on a good day!) Yeah, they were spunkier in the city traffic than many SUVs out there, but poor performers when offroading. Much worse than an old '90 Defender 2.0 tdi with max output of 107hp@3,900rpm! (My uncle works still the heck one of thise today)
My Discovery could do only about half of what the granddaddy Defender could do with only 100hp!
At least with my 2.7, I don't need to worry about breaking traction when pressing the accelerator :D
    I ❤️ My 2.7! *here's an idea for a bumpersticker*

After getting the new OEM ECU tune, it’s pretty obvious why everyone complained about the sucky engine....

The original tune was freaking garbage.

With the old tune I couldnt even hold speed on slight inclines while in 6th or 5th gear. In lower RPM the engine felt like it had absolutely no power at all.

The new tune fixed all my complaints as a Manual transmission owner.

However, I find it odd that there are threads like this that defend the old tune. I don’t understand it?

Toyota made a mistake and fixed it. Yet people still defend their mistake? Why? Toyota loyalty is worse than apple

Me too. I had a 17 TRD OR with an AT. Didn't like it. Traded it for a 18 TRD Pro MT. Happy as a clam. My 6th Toyota pick-up in 35 years.

It's an AWD rather than a part-time 4WD. It's like a Subaru, and fills a need for some. I rarely see them in New Mexico. Unibody I believe as well. It wouldn't do well on many of the trails in New Mexico.

I went up a five mile, seven percent grade (empty) last week in 6th, then 5th gear holding around 72 mph. I towed a 4400 lb trailer up that same grade in 4th gear at 58 mph no problem.
There. I just cancelled your opinion.
"Everybody" is not complaining. This forum and Facebook groups are a tiny slice of owners. You didn't like the stock tune. That's fine but don't lump others into your little world.

I went up a similar incline and held the same speed in 6th gear after the new OEM tune.

    What is the deal here?

Toyota spent 100s of thousands, maybe even millions in RD cost to remap the fuel and timing maps for the 2GR-FKS in the our trucks.

And here you are saying that there was no problem to begin with? Are you crazy?

Are you an automotive engineer that works for Toyota and specifically worked on remapping the torque curves in the Tacoma 3.5 engine?

I code software. I am an authority on programimg ECU tunes because I am a programmer?

Nope, I just know a little about off highway vehicle design and physics, seeing how I've been doing it for 28 years. I post to help, not to bitch.

    I don’t think you’re helping.

The new OEM Tune fixed many issues with this engine. Toyota should be aplauded for listening to customer feedback and fixing the issue, but there shouldn’t have been an issue to begin with.

Thousands of customers are not happy with this engine’s performance. They should be directed first to the new OEM tune before they make a final opinion. Then maybe to OVtune if that doesn’t help.

Telling people that they just don’t “get” the original OEM tune when the new tune is such an improvement is just going to belittle people who have justified grievances as customers.

the original tune is trash and Tacoma customers shouldn’t be told to its deal with it. Go to a dealer and get the new tune. The smoother engine performance and increased low power is well the price of admission, which is free.

Nobody needs to live with it especially after dropping 40k and even 50k on this truck.

Well said. I had to rev the hell out of my gen 1 when it was time to put her to work. I was happy with the low end torque of my gen 2, but the hp was a little lacking at the top end. The gen 3 motor has more power if you need it (on the top end). I don't mind reving her up the few times a year when I have to haul something heavy. Just doesn't make sense to me to buy a truck that can tow 12,000lbs when I only tow < 5,000lbs occasionally.

Wow. Just .... wow. 40k may not be a lot for a truck but it could be a lot for a human. Just because it’s 40k, Doesn’t justify its shortcomings.

When I wanted to buy a TRD pro the dealership wanted 55k for it.

Want do you want me to prove? I drove off the lot with the new OEM tune and immediately felt difference. Better low end power. No more dead spot around 1.5k to 2k rpm. A smoother transition into 3.5-4K rpm power surge. And while in 5th and 6th, I can now freely accelerate from 1.5k rpm to 3K rpm whether on flat or inclines. whereas before, in higher gears, the engine felt like it would stall under high load/low rpm, so I would frantically upshift on the freeway.

That’s all I can say about the new OEM tune.

OVtune did the real investigating and sure enough, the timing and torque mapping has been changed.
