Tragic accident involving a 3rd gen today

Never called for that, but let’s not get twisted here and feel bad for her because she feels bad. Article reports that the stop arm was extended, this means red lights blinking too, and yet we have apologists on here saying things like “kids might have ran out prematurely” really wtf people, where’s this culture of “victimizers turn victims” coming from

 

Others have called for that.

I disagree with the other sentiments. I still can have the capacity for empathy towards this woman, even when she did what she did. How do you think she feels? I'm almost positive it's tearing her up. This doesn't mean she shouldn't be punished appropriately or that I would let her off the hook. Hate for her won't bring those kids back either.

 

Just saw it on the news,
She had 3 kids in her truck and the children that were hit were crossing the road. She was going the opposite direction the bus was. It was a situation for a disaster the way the bus stop is set up. They are now reconfiguring the bus route to turn off the main road and pick up children in the neighborhood.
She stated that she saw flashing lights, but by the time she realized it was a school bus it was to late.

 

Have you no love or sympathy for your fellow human beings? Yes, this was a terrible tragedy but if you think it is ok to condemn someone like this, be prepared because you will be judged the same way.

 

It happend again today in Mississippi. Child was struck trying to get on the bus. Another young driver behind the wheel. does not say what kind of truck he was driving.

Held my baby extra close today Kept thinking what on earth I would do if something happened to her.

 

I have a 15 year old who just got his learners permit and we have some of the most dangerous intersections in the nation. I’m always preaching to him to watch his ass going through em and to drive the posted speed limit. Was this lady speeding? I’m my experience staying at speed limit especially on surface streets can prevent most accidents. Just a tragedy I don’t know what her punishment should be, I’d imagine if she’s a normal person she’d feel disgust and remorse the rest of her life regardless of prison time.

 

It makes me cringe. May those poor kids rest in peace. I read that the older sister used her body to shield her brothers.

what a nightmare. no other words.

 

1. If you're one of the people calling this murder, then you could yourself be charged with theft because you are stealing the oxygen you breathe.

2. Her punishment should be based on her degree of culpability, be it negligently or recklessly, or intentionally and that has not been determined. There are mitigating factors as well, was were the lights flashing yellow or red, was she speeding, is the witness who states the arm was extended remembering things accurately Etc.

3. No one knows the facts, but I do have faith that investigations will lead to the truth, and hopefully change the way these bus stops occur reducing the probability of similar incidents.

4. The NHTSB is sending a team to investigate, and I expect that investigation to review not only if the driver was impaired, distracted etc, but what roll the bus procedures and stop location played.

 

Don't you know that the media has changed everything? Guilty until you can buy your proof of your innocence?

 

Local news has had more info from their connections inside the police dept..

1. Extended arm was knocked off, and laying in the roadway. Good indication it was extended.

2. Accident scene was in front of a trailer park where the kids lived. As of today, busses will pull into the trailer park to do pick ups. The small entrance has it's own risk, as the bus has to do a 3-point turn to get in and out.

3. Some local stations are reporting that the driver was rushing to the hospital where her father was being treated for a heart attack. Rumor has it her father passed away. No official word on that as of yet.

4. A 4th child from the same family was NOT boarding the bus because her mother was taking her to a doctor's appointment later that morning.

 

School just admitted to some fault in that article. She's going to get off easy.

To those of you calling for her hanging, firing squad, life in prison etc... Please move to a country where the idea of law and order just looks pretty on paper and vigilantism holds the scale of justice. If you're going to think like that, go live in a place that acts like it. There's plenty of places to choose from.
Never mind that you're this perfect specimen of a law abiding tax paying citizen that can do no wrong so fuck everyone else, but here we are, voicing our weak emotional thinking to something that requires, wait for it, rational thinking.
People like that act all noble with that simple minded thinking until it's their kid that drowns in the bathtub. People who are drug addicts are the villains who deserve death until it's their kid who becomes an addict and now they're the victim. Short sighted, simply minded.

It's okay to be wrong. I'm wrong everyday - but I have the fortitude to learn everyday as well - to admit, to learn, to make an effort. Life is so much easier when you do this.

 

Most people don't understand the physics involved, but a few things to keep in mind.

1. Three things determine the stopping distance.

• How long it takes you to see the obstacle.
• How long it takes your brain to react to the obstacle.
• How long it takes the vehicle to stop once brake is applied.

What causes the driver to see the obstacle more slowly? Lots of things.

• Was the driver impaired? Under the influence of medicine, drugs etc. or tired.
• Was the obstacle visible? Low visibility, fog, road bends/hills, other obstacles & vehicles, flashing lights etc.
• Was the driver distracted? Eating, texting, changing the radio, under duress etc.

What causes the brain to react and communicate / decide to brake/swerve etc.

• Threat analysis, situational awareness, anticipation etc.

What impacts the length of time it takes the vehicle to stop once brakes applied?

• Vehicle condition.
• Road condition.
• Weather condition.
• Traffic condition.

2. So if you are distracted even momentarily, you could cover a large distance.

• @60MPH, you are essentially covering 88ft per second. So to glance down at your radio, phone, etc. for even one second you just covered 88ft.
• @60MPH, you are essentially covering 88ft per second. So a 1 second reaction time to apply brakes and you just covered 88ft.
• @60MPH, your braking distance can vary but most likely in excess of 150ft.

That means that almost 350 ft have flown by if the driver glanced down for even a second. Looking away for 3 seconds and your total stopping distance can be 1/10th of a mile.

3. Anyone who states they have never taken their eyes off the road for even a second is mistaken or a liar.
