I’m into Group V synthetics like Redline and keeping oil for 1-2 years on OCI if you don’t drive a lot.

10k max OCI on any oil any brand.

Amsoil... When you say "I love it"... what makes you say that? Can you tell a difference in how the truck runs??

Let me answer that... The only way anyone, including experts, can tell how ANY oil performs is to tear down that specific engine after a number of miles (let's say 100K) and compare that engine to a "control" engine that has also been disassembled. Both engines must have te same mileage and same duty cycle, meaning one engine cannot be 99% interstate driving and the other 50% interstate driving.
They can test other engines, they can compare "color" of oil, they can even compare oil analysis but, until their specific engine is torn down and compared against a control, saying one brand is better than another is just talking out their ass.
Too many regular people fall for marketing hype, listen to "experts" like their buddy mechanic or just "feel" one is better than the other by reading literature that, unless they are trained tribologists, they cannot understand.

This is how large OEM's do it and they will do dozens of tests against controls. As a matter of fact, while they will do "real world" tests in the field, they most compelling tests are done on the test stand where all loads and cycles can be exactly the same.
And, just to confuse you further, certain types of engines wear better with certain oil additives.

If you truly want your engine to go the maximum, you are looking at the wrong thing. Filtration is the key, not brand of oil.

I have a few stories to back this up.

Sludgey goop on bearings from a 351W after 1 year.
Valve covers from a 4.3L GM V6 work truck that were caked up with goop.
One of my professors (who worked at a GM test lab) told the class to stay away from Quaker State

Yup. I'd use Wal-Mart brand oil before Quaker State.

Other than that, most any would be fine.

 

Brand loyalty is an odd human behavior often explained for example as "my dad always drove insert brand of choice here". Purely speculative and anecdotal. Unfortunately we have all done it.

Just F Ing drive it already. You can use solid gold oil so the engine will be like new at 200k. But the rest of the truck will be rotted out.

 

Send for the $12 rebate and it's even cheaper, keep an eye on Mobil 1 website as they offer it a few times a year and you can stock up on it.

 

Some States don't have inspections.

Mobil1: motor, or whatever Toyota uses at 10,000
Redline: MT, transfer case, diffs
ujoints: Paragon 3000 lithium (I replaced my non-greaseable rear ujoints with Neapco greaseable)

BTW with 6 Toyota pick-ups in 30 years, I've never seen a dealer lube ujoints, probably why Toyota stopped putting greaseable ujoints in Tacoma real driveshafts, possibly all their vehicles now.

 

My FIL's '03 Dakota and '04 Sienna have lived almost exclusively on Walmart SuperTech conventional. About 3 years ago I switched to ST high mileage. Then about a year ago I switched to ST HM synthetic.

Both vehicles are well north of 100k miles with zero oil consumption. When I replaced the valve cover gaskets on the Dakota a couple of years ago...the valve train look great...clean with no sludge.

I'm currently running ST 0w-20 in my wife's '18 RAV4 Hydrid and ST HM 5w-30 in my daughter's '10 Yaris.

It's gen II Dexos approved. So it can't be too bad.

EDIT: The Sienna and Yaris currently have Valvoline MaxLife 5w-30 in them because I found some on clearance at a store that was closing. But they will have ST back in them at the next change.

 

I dunno why you guys were up in arms about another oil thread. I'm enjoying this one. Been goin well so far imo.
