Replacement Wheel Advise

I'm looking for some help determining wheel replacement specs for a 2000 Tacoma.

I wanted black wheels, and went with a set that the "wheel guy" at the tire shop suggested-as far as--offset/backspacing etc. He assured me that "they wouldn't stick out more than the OEM wheels you already have"

Sure enough, they sick out almost 2" more.

(this was three years ago, and originally I didn't mind that they stuck out, but I'm tired of the look)

It seems as though the stock alloy wheel specs are: 4WD; Size: 15 x 7; OffSet: 15MM; Stud/Lug: 6; Bolt Pattern: 5.5; Design: 6 Spoke

But, I've seen other specs as well.

Has anyone purchased some decent replacement wheels and know the specs (offset, backspacing) to look for so they dont stick out, but fit like the stock wheels do?

Attached is a pic of the style of wheel Im trying to stick with. Something basic. In fact, if I could get these same wheels that fit properly I would.

 

Any 16x7 Toyota Alloy wheel will work. can always paint them black. or the stock steel wheels are the correct size and offset, and they are usually black to begin with.

Most wheels will have 4.5" or 4.75" back spacing.
Stock wheels are 5.75" on 2nd gens...
Factory wheels are 7-7.5" wide most aftermarket wheels are 8" or wider.
Most people will run 4 runner or TRD wheels to keep them in the wheel wells.

Looks like the wheels on tire rack only have 0, -6 or -7mm offset...
They do sell 7" wide but not enough BS or off set to tuck the wheel in...
It's going to be hard to find wheels.
So you may need to find a set of factory wheels to tuck them in...

It's limited out there as far as finding wheels, specifically 15 x 7. I have the stock wheels, they are the polished aluminum. Hard to paint those.

 

They can be painted.
A lot of people plastidip them first and if turns out good will paint or powder coat them.
You could, paint, powder coat, anodize or chrome them... Just google your area and check out their shops....

I've tried that exact painting technique and it didnt work well. The paint and clear coat easily scrapes off with a finger nail even after a week of curing. So...I've found that there is more to it than that thread offers. I think it must require much more sanding, primer, etching primer...whatever, to get it to work.

 

There's the AR172 Baja that comes in a 15x7. IIRC it has 3.75" backspace so they will stick out 3/4" more than stock wheels do, but will stick out 3/4" to 1" less than the wheels it looks like you currently have. These are one of the only aftermarket wheels I've found in a 15x7. Most are 15x8.
Do you know what wheels you have or any of the specs on them?

15" wheels are getting harder and harder to find. My dad put the polished version of these on his 92 pickup and they look great. OP may want just a set of the generic black steel wheels made by procomp or crager or the like.

I've found these Baja wheels, it's just hard to tell how much they'll stick out. Thanks for the 3/4" info.

The current wheels have are 15 x 8 with a -18mm offset. (yep, the guy said they wouldnt stick out). I've read many threads describing what offset and backspace means, but it's honestly difficult for me to tell what will and wont stick out.

I believe the stock backspace is maybe 4.54ish? and 15mm offset? But, you arent going to find a new, black, Baja type wheel with those measurements it seems. Seems impossible to get one that will be inside the wheel well like the stock wheels are.

Right, but did those Bajas stick out?

Even the steelies (like my spare has) are out of stock. Can you find center caps for those?

 

For instance, these: https://www.summitracing.com/parts/are-ar1725884b have a 19mm offset (stock appears to be 15mm, and the ones I have that stick out have -18mm offset). So, I wonder what 19mm offset would look like?

((negative – offset) the wheel and tire are moved out toward the fender and with a large enough negative offset the tire will stick out past the fender.)

So, shouldn't stick out.

 

They might like less than an inch. But that truck has a completely different front suspension/hub setup than a Taco. And frankly, I forget what the stock setup even looked like. A lot of guys on here run the baja series or procomp 69 series wheels, or MT classics and seem to like them.

 

@Corn From the numbers you're listing, your wheels have a 3.75" backspace. Same as the Baja wheels do. The Baja wheels will essentially stick out 1" less than your current wheels since they are one inch narrower than them. This is 3/4" further out than the stock OEM wheels. How acceptable that is is up to you.

No, 3/4" is not bad. Not sure which wheel you are referring to though that will stick out 3/4".

Stock wheels that I have are 15 x 7 with a +15 offset. Backspacing: 4.59.

Im guessing that less backspacing = tire sticks out further. Same with a negative offset.

I think that is perfect...I understand that the OP does not feel the same.

 

At my local Toyota dealer the parts dept ALWAYS have a set or 2 or 3 of "take offs", factory tires and wheels that are taken off new trucks when aftermarket wheel/tires are put on. There is some discretion on pricing depending on if there was any credit extended between the new car department/sales department and parts department.
