Arb tire deflator vs Staun tire deflator

Love these. I went to this same item after using the ARB style deflator where valve core removal is required. On some trips, I have to air up and down 4-6 times going from pavement to another site in a day. Sometimes, the stem holder didn't seem to bleed off as well without fudging it a little to get it to bleed properly. After a few months and getting out two to three times on weekends, I noticed the wear on the brass valve cores as the threads turn black. Even had a couple of issues with the core seal not sealing as well and resulted in slow leaks during the week while at work.
Went to the "staun style" from boulder tools and no issues after taking them apart, cleaning them and pre-tensioning (breaking-in) the springs. Make sure the o-rings aren't twisted in the grooves and you're good to go. I almost never use anything "out of the box" as I like to inspect and do my own QC. My included gauge was fairly accurate also.

Make sure you calibrate them for the tires on your truck. It's the downside to these as it takes a bit of time to do it. Once it's set, you're good for awhile.

 

I was curious how they worked and found this video. Setup looks fairly simple.

 

I have the Stauns and love them. I deflated one tire to 16 pound, put one of the deflates on and tighten it down until it just started to hiss. I pulled that on off and did the same thing with the other three. Total piece of cake to get them all tuned in.

 

You can vary the set pressure of two or four of them but that kinda negates the "ease of use" benefit of them. Be sure to crank the set screw down hard and maybe mark a line of paint to indicate non-movement.

The trailhead tire deflators is nice if you often vary the pressure. No chance of losing the valve stem but deflation will be slower than just pulling the valves.

The quality of the actual valve-core puller is good. I believe this is the patented part by Burkey and is shared by all the various brands. I am not really pleased with the rest the pressure gauge on the ARB Looks cheap and the protective rubber cover doesn't even fit snug. I have not had the opportunity to compare with the other brands. But I'd like to see a currie or accu-gage version. I have one of the regular dial type accu-Gage's gauges that seems to be of better quality. But perhaps these are all the same.

The Stauns have two problems;
1)They are never set for the pressure I want to run today.
2)They are all over the place on what pressure the actually shut off at. The ambient temp seems to change the shut off pressure, worse it does not seem to be uniform across the set I have.
With the Terraflex style, I put one on, wait a minute and install the rest. Every minute or so I check the first one. When it gets close I release it and the rest then air them down one at a time. It works really well, plus I can lend one or two out to friends and still get aired down pretty fast.

The other advantage is that at $10 I can afford to have a set in every truck, unlike the Stuans.

 

Good info, I will have to look into those. I use ARB deflator, which works pretty well. Nice and fast air down. I looked at Staun, but crazy how much PSI varies based on ambient temp, tire temp. I noticed the other day, the side of the truck sitting in the sun was 6 psi higher than the other side.
