Im new to Connecticut from South Carolina and I keep hearing these salt damage stories. I just bought a new Tacoma a few weeks ago and I was wondering if it’s necessary to get an undercoating? I’m not sure if the manufacturer does anything special at the factory or not.

Best time for a permanent application is when the vehicle is new and the underside is in as good a condition as it will ever be. Any significant delay (like past a winter) likely lessens the effectiveness.

Also, consider the annual oil applications like Krown (https://www.krown.com/en/). Some folks in the rust belt swear by this type of treatment.

There is a lot of debate (like everything car related) about the most effective methods or if its even recommended. On top of asking here, be sure to do some searches and lots of reading.

Most of us in the New England thread use Fluid Film. We actually meet up at least once a year to have a fluid film meet and @surfandturf will do it for $40. He's in Granby, CT.

Welcome to CT, usually people are heading from here to SC...

I highly recommend the FF, I have been doing it since new and no rust for me after 125k miles. What the state and towns put down for liquid salt will rust your truck up in a matter of years if you leave it as is. We still have some warm enough days left for a spray. PM me to set something up.

    Thanks @Landnyk for the reference

I had Krown done to my new truck. Did a bunch of research and seemed like a good idea since the coverage is so good. (Paid $150).

I will probably give a diy FF a shot after this winter and see how I like it compared to Krown and just paying to have it done for me.

I am an advocate of undercoating. I also spend time to maintain it. Solvent based (never quite hardens) seems to be the trend for professional applications. It will also make the truck quieter.

I spray FF yearly and it’s a fantastic product. Another thumbs up from me.

Okay so I bought fluid film in a gallon and I thought it would be liquid like similar to whats in the aerosol can. But I realized is super thick. Is it fine if I spread it across with a paint brush? or does it have to be a thin even coating?

Not sure about the paintbrush. I don't see why not. The recommended method is a spray gun. The main reason is to get nice coverage so that the fluid film can seep into all the cracks and crevices. Also helps to warm up the fluid film before hand.

Air compressor that has enough capacity to hold 90-120 psi. Get the fluid film gun, face mask and goggles and you are good to go. Also mix it well before you start

Really need to get inside the frame rails. Frames usually rot from the inside out.

I took a leisurely 250 mile round trip to SurfandTurf's place today to get my new 18 TRD OR coated with FF. I can't thank him enough for helping me out, doing great work and being a nice guy on top of it all! I had heard of FF shortly before I was considering getting a new Tacoma, then I found this forum and lastly bought the truck. Of all the little things I've picked up for the truck in the last month, I think the FF is probably the cheapest and yet, best spent money. Matt it was great meeting you and I greatly appreciate your help - if I didn't say it enough while I was there! Bill in Plymouth. MA

When I bought my 17' in October, the first thing I did was go to my brother-in-law's body shop to have it undercoated. He stated that Toyota "dips" all 3rd Gen bodies during assembly of the vehicle. He said undercoating is unnecessary. His body shop is very successful and well respected in the area. I have no reason to doubt him.

Of course... if you still get your Taco undercoated, what can it hurt. Good luck.
