There has to be a 12v source somewhere at the rear end harness, maybe to the fuel system.

Believe me, you don't want to power your camper lights from wires "essential to guts" of your truck. This is like connecting a coffee maker to USB port in your PC.

If we're talking a basic 12v LED domelight I see no issue.

Any stupid thing that might happen to that light (short in the shitty LED bulb, cracked wire due to shell vibrating, really anything) you will blow the essential fuse and possibly stalling a truck.

That would be similar to one these (it's always amazes me how stupid some "clever ideas" are):

I didnt even notice this. I just had an engine replacement a few months ago, it must have been the mechanics who failed to do this. Thank you

Oh boy, a shop left it like that? Hope everything else is actually done properly with the engine swap.

can't find anyone who won't half ass a job these days. That's half the reason why I refuse to buy a new vehicle. I know how to work on most of my junk.. why risk it?

Wait.... so as someone who needs to wire up their 3rd brakelight/led dome light on their camper shell.....where should I run the wire from if not just tapping into ohhhh say the brake lights? Well I guess 3rd brake light has to be the brake lights to get the proper signal, but where would be the optimal run for the led lights?

My camper has two wires going in (besides ground). The third brake light is LED taking very little power and it is tapped straight to left brake lamp. I have all bulbs replaced with LED (including the third brake light in the cab, that nobody can see anyway :)) so I'm not worried about adding one lamp to brake circuit.

The camper light is powered via separate wire put in a wire loom along the original rear lights wire loom, going into the cabin (under driver seat) and then through firewall all the way to the battery. That wire is protected by 10A inline fuse (close to the battery). My camper lights take about 6A total (two double row LED strips and 5W LED bulb.)

Inside that additional loom together with camper light wire I have also backup camera wire and rear fog light wire. You can see that loom on my fluid film picture (additional loom pointed by arrow)

That's scary man. Seriously. And this is why good shops are booked out months apparently. But the best way to avoid getting screwed by a shop is exactly what thunderone said, don't take your stuff to a shop.

I'm not particularly mechanically inclined enough to swap an engine, so a shop is the only option for me.

If you noticed, your truck is still in tact. The bomb squad successfully cut the red wire.

Even simple job like oil change can be screwed up. On several occasions I had to come back to Toyota service in Elk Grove to fix what their "lube tech" screwed up: cross threaded or misding bolts in skid plate, leaking drain plug, leaking filter, cross threaded and finally stripping thread in oil pan.

After they cross threaded drain plug for the first time I knew that the oil pan will have to be replaced some day so I never touched it and was coming back only to them for oil change. And year later they stripped the thread, so they had to pay for the new oil pan. After that they never saw me again.

Yeah, I hear you. I had a very similar experience with my 2016 Hyundai at the dealer. From my notes:

Oil leaking from engine drain plug onto garage floor. Dealer improperly installed the drain plug and the plug’s gasket was damaged. Dealer replaced gasket and put in new oil. Dealer also reinstalled one screw holding splash pan to right front metal (was improperly installed, not all the way in). Dealer washed oil from undercarriage (there was very little oil) using high pressure water/steam hose. Dealer ordered new oil filter cover to replace old one that was soaked with oil.

I loathe all dealer service shops... :annoyed:

I forgot to add that for the time I was going to that dealer for the oil change I always removed a skid plate. After I fixed all cross-threaded bolts for skid plate I didn't want them to mess with it anymore.
