The real life scenario is you are going along and then come to a slight upgrade and need to maintain speed.

But I have a manual transmission and can downshift.

My point here is the 1.05 tune feels even more flat than the stock tune in a case like this. Which seems unintuitive.

The truck literally does not react to your full throttle input at all.

I hear you, but I've yet to be in a situation like that, nor have I yet to be in a similar situation that wasn't fixed by just downshifting, because that's the whole point of the manual...you have to do it yourself, and I've also never purposefully put myself in that scenario because that's just absurd and ridiculous to me.

You do you brother, carry on

What rpm are you at in 6th at 50?

6th at 50 in the AT would be like 1000 rpm maybe, or less

Maybe 50 isn’t exact but let’s say any less than 2000rpm in 6th gear. Closer to 1500rpm.

Can’t stress enough that 1.05 is still doing the job, just seems like a red flag that it feels more flat than stock in this area.

For what it's worth, 6th at 55 or 60mph, one of those, is like 1800-2000 iirc, somewhere around there.

I know the solution is downshifting...and that’s what I do. That’s not my quibble. I’m fine with driveability at lower speeds and higher RPM.

Comparing apples to apples, whatever that may be, 1.05 is more flat when faced with this specific situation than the stock TSB tune I just came from.

I guess I'm just not fundamentally understanding why you so badly want to be able to floor it in 6th gear, an overdrive gear, at nearly 1500rpm or less, and accelerate quickly or really at all, knowing that you're in too high of a gear for what you want to do.

Hell, someone will no doubt chime in and say for you to get an AT then, but even an auto will still downshift in the same sort of scenario

I don't think I've ever been in 6th at 50 and then buried it. If I want to accelerate rapidly, I downshift...

I drive like a grandma and don't have any complaints thus far. I also drive like a jackass and don't have any complaints. Depends on the day

disagree. sub 2000 rpm is much more lively than any of the previous 69,xxx miles I've driven across various tunes.

I surely must be doing a bad job explaining it, but I am not trying to accelerate quickly. I've owned exclusively manual trans vehicles (and just one automatic) for 10+ years (including CDL). Very happy I do not have an auto in the Tacoma.

Quite possibly this is something strange with my driving style and call it an "edge case". We will see.

I loaded the 87 MA file this morning with a fresh tank of 0% ethanol 89 octane. Initial thoughts are good. I have already sent Matt some logs on this file. Other than that I’m keeping my mouth shut till I get some miles on it.

6th gear in any manual transmission vehicle is garbage at 50ish mph. WOT at low RPMs and high gear causes engine lugging until the RPMs reach the power band for the gear the vehicle is in.

Personally, I cruise in 4th gear at 50mph and see 23+ mpg with 4.88’s and 35’s. If I upshifted to 6th at that speed, I could stand on the pedal and literally get out accelerated by a Walmart power scooter.

I have a small town I pass through on my commute. I seldom shift out of 6th when driving through it unless I don’t time the red lights correctly. Doing this I dip as low as 30mph in 6th. When I get to the other side of town I often just hit resume on the cruise control and let it do it’s thing. Don’t think I have ever just floored it at 50 in 6th gear. Closest I can get to the logic on this.

I do not experience any lugging doing the cruise resume. I am usually up to 45-50mph when I do that though.

Why is this dude flooring it on the second overdrive gear and then complaining about it?

What you said is a dramatization of exactly what I am trying to describe. Glad someone else is doing something similar, I swear I am not insane.

Nature of the beast to be gutless in that situation if that is what you are experiencing.
