How many of you wound up purchasing your Tacoma after turning in your VW due to the Dieselgate scandal?

Purchased: 2017 Tacoma Sport, DCSB, 4x4, manual trans, Quicksand

Turned in: 2012 VW Golf TDI, manual trans, White, 4 door

I was a sales manager at a VW dealership before, during and after.. I had many TDI’s and Audi’s... and ended up with an 18 TRD PRO and love it.

My TDI is older but I am keeping it until that thing dies.

Edit - So I guess what I'm saying is keep the TDI and get the Tacoma.

    What was the dieselgate issue?

I have the oil burner and 81k miles and while I've had my share of electrical/sensor issues, the engine itself has been rock solid. Did some towing last year and it was nothing (felt like a V8).

Only trading it in for a Taco soon cos I have the need for a pickup now and the fact that maintenance is super expensive (my Indy shop does it but $800 for a one axle brake job is no fun!!). But yeah..will miss the diesel performance and the sports handling on the X5 when I do switch to the Taco (probably end of year).

I kept my ‘12 wagon TDI. Got the $, redeleted the DPF and did a stage 2 tune (actually deleted and tuned before the scandal was even news) The car has 295ft/lb of torque....wish the Tacoma had a tad more, but we are happy with both vehicles.

    vehicles on roads. same universe.

i totaled a VW R32 at 136k miles, and i planned to run her forever but that big ol semi truck wheel in the middle of the fast lane had other plans for us.

after that i decided to get something MT and tough. turns out the Tacoma is about 1000x more fun to drive than the R32 ever was. definitely was not expecting that! so, i'm a convert.

Volkswagon installed software that would trick the EPA sensors into thinking there were lower levels of emissions. Quite a big deal in the news with VW being fined over 1 Billion dollars.

I had a 2013 Jetta TDI lease and returned it (bc of diesel gate)back with 2 years remaining. VW told me I had to pay the full amount and I said screw off.

Bought my taco without any problems. Guess VW didn’t report it. Never saw it on my credit report.

Surprisingly we had a ton of sales from the whole debacle... VW says they took a pretty good hit, but in reality they're a pretty healthy company. For every 100 buy backs we did, we had one tree hugger asshole who would try to argue. VW gave everyone WAY more than what their vehicles were worth.. not to mention Bosch stepping up and sending checks too.

Our household had two MKVI Golf TDI's. We returned both of them in the buybacks. Mother in law now has a MKVII GTI and I have the Tacoma. We're all pretty happy with how it turned out. The money from the Dieselgate fiasco definitely made buying the Taco possible.

On a side note, I still have the custom plates from the Golf of DSLGATE. Sometimes I consider putting them on the truck.

We are a car and truck family. Replaced our TDI with a RAV 4 after the buyback. The RAV 4 has been problem-free but boring to drive, not like the Jetta. Those diesel Jettas were economical to buy and operate. We had four of them between 1986 and 2018. Too bad.

I kind of did this... went to a 4Runner first then to a Tacoma. As much as I miss my little TDI golf, love my Tacoma.

Golfs are cool I guess. It would fit the bill for a wife's car that's also pretty sweet to drive. But to daily? I'm 6'0 and wide shouldered, the Tacoma fits just about right, I think i'd go nuts in a Golf.

Dollars to donuts' they are not the only company to play with software. I had a 1990 golf diesel. drove it until 2003. had 435000 Km and a bit. threw the alternator belt ( also water pump belt) overheated, blew a hose and pissed out all the coolant. was sorry to see it go, still loved to drive it. Think it had a whopping 52 HP brand new. If I had had one of the new ones, i would have kept it.
