I am also interested in Regear. Researching price, options: 4.88/5.29 and reputable shop in an around Abq.

I thought east coast gear supply was just an online vendor. Do they have shop in Abq. and does regear/installation?

ECGS is an online vendor based out of NC. When I looked into regearing a couple years back it was about the same, maybe a little cheaper to go through ECGS for a regear. Plus the downtime was minimaized since you just send in your diffs as a core after you swap them out. Some people will buy the ring and pinon and rebuild kits from ECGS and take them to a local shop and have them installed in the 3rd/clamshell.

So they sell front and rear diffs already assembled and you get some money back if you ship back your factory diffs?

Yeah basically. The initial cost includes a core charge that you get refunded after returning your stock diffs.

@boostedka nailed it. Just pay the core and you get it back when they receive your diffs. Pretty easy job to just swap out the third members.

    So is these my options:?

    1) 4.88 for shop assembly and installation

    Or

    2) 5.29 for shop assembly and install

    Or

    3) Front fully assembled 4.88 or 5.29 + shop install

    And

Rear fully assembled 4.8& or 5.29 + shop install

For shop assembly I'd say estimate about $600 for the two diffs. Possibly more. I'd call somewhere in town to get an exact number, though. Also, if your truck doesn't have too many miles on it yet, they might be able to use "mini install kits" which are basically just the carrier bearings instead of a full install kit.

Got a 2016 with maybe 25k miles. Any shops you recommend? And how you liking the 4.88? So buying fully assembled by ECGS would be preferred i would think + comes with 5 yr warranty i read somewhere.

Also, Per max powell’s youtube video, the 3.5 engine 3rd gens are happy with little higher rev so 5.29 is not an issue. He seems to love it. I just don’t wanna crave for more power if i go 4.88... just like i just had to do my tires/lift twice to be happy with height...lol

My buddy took his 1st gen diffs to a local ABQ (i can't remember the name off hand, but I'll figure it out). He had 26k miles at the time and they didn't need a full kit. This route might still be close to the ECGS diffs though. Plus, like you said, the warranty is nice as well. If it was me and had the money, I'd just go through ECGS. They are super awesome and have great customer service.

My truck revs to about 3200 at 75mph on the interstate. That's good for my like 3rz motor. I've also heard from others as well that the 3.5 likes the higher revs as well. Check out the grimmjeeper gear calculator to figure out your exact rpms. http://www.grimmjeeper.com/gears.html

Grinder would have been tedious, and I don't have a plasma cutter. I did it the fun way, with a sawzall...

    PA253719.jpg

Finished the nubs of with a flap disk on the grinder...

    PA253721.jpg

Did a quick "patch" paint job to keep the rust at bay and voila!! I'll probably end up refinishing the whole thing down the road someday anyway. For now I'll see how I like the flat top.

    PA253722.jpg

And didn't the bump take place at Cedro Peak when you were climbing that rocky section?

Alrigty let me know when you find out the Gear installers shop name. I gotta put all the prices together, seems pricy but i think def worth it.
Most likey buy the whole gear assembled by Pros at ECGS and return my factory core and get the diff installed locally.

Also, on a completely unrelated subject, my truck didn't miss a beat on my trip to Iowa City and Indianapolis last week. I made it to Iowa City from Rio Rancho in 14 hours & 20 minutes, around 1120 miles. Would have made it faster if not for the stupid 105mph governor. :annoyed: The truck was a LOT peppier at close to sea level. 15% more power than at 5k' makes a big difference, IMO. The truck used about 1/5 of a quart of oil during the trip; considering the speeds driven, that's not bad at all.

I need some help here; Are the front and rear lower control arm bushings the same part number for my '04 Taco 4x4?

    Never mind, they are different.

Ha! That wasn't so much a bump as almost running you over. Forgot about that little incident.

I was thinking of this moment:

    DSC_0080.jpg

Scott was riding shotgun. And the guy with the white 2nd Gen came along. DSC_0009.jpg

And, btw, that was how it was originally going to look when I ordered the bumper. Elite messed up and added the hoop unasked for. Seems a bit odd but really think it is because I'm not used to it.

I have thought about getting the super charger for the FJ. I really miss the lack of gasping that the S/C gave my old 1st gen at these altitudes.

yes. they are. PITA to switch out too. SGT_Taco did a few. I think he finally just burned out the rubber. I ponied up the bucks and replaced the whole damn control arms.

I am taking Veteran's Day week off, 10Nov - 18Nov. I'm volunteering at the food bank on the 12th but otherwise free. If anyone wants to hit a trail or do some wrenching, let me know.
