Titanium skids? Maybe if I was living in some shit hole like Asscrackastain where I needed blast protection from an IED.

I figured as much, I just never see it in the aerospace industry and so I assume most other industries avoid it. I’ve heard the shielding process required is of utmost importance.

How about explosive bonding 1/8" steel to 1/4" aluminum? Lighter weight, slides like steel, best of both worlds. Heck, its only money. :spending:

Incorrect about the welding but accurate with the other points.

Partially correct, it's not cheap or fast (compared to MIG) but any person who can TIG and has a little practice should be able to work with TI.

This^^^ Suppressor manufacturers use welded TI cans quite a bit.

My 20 lb road bike with Ti frame cost $3000 easily. Most of that’s in the frame.

They are now making steel frame bikes that feel very similar to Ti and they’re much less $.

If you’re rich enough to afford Ti skids, go for it.

It just makes more sense to use steel skids and replace them if they become mangled instead of dealing with Ti and the expense.

This is what I’ll do. I’ll set some chromoly tube aside and order up the same OD titanium tube, but somewhere between 30 to 35 % lighter. Then I’ll do a measured crush test on my press and get it on video, 1 take, no cuts/edits, with a sexy assistant, in MY shop. FTR my prediction is any titanium tube with the same OD that is lighter than the 4130 will crush with less force. Since it’s my money and my time, don’t wait up. But I’m penciling it in.

If there’s a better way to duplicate trail damage I’m all for it.

    Lots of sail boat fuel

So bad ass when they do that to the helicopter landing pads on Navy ships.

I put my vote in for Unobtainium

I think the biggest reason for no Ti skids it's that the costs outweigh the befitis/$. There's a bunch of free ways to shave the same weight off the truck, but not many people do it, because while saying weight is a concern it really isn't for most people. And for those who are serious about weight can take it off for way cheaper in other ways.

Titanium is also very hard, a steel skid will bend and dent with big impacts. I would think titanium would simply crack.
