Do this. Provide a link to the dealer so they can read us ridiculing his facilities.

I haven't been back to a dealership since an expensive pair of sunglasses went mysteriously missing. My fault I shouldn't have left them in the truck, but love the "We are not responsible for lost or stolen items sign at the counter"... Techs are thieving bastards.

I’d like to see the video, just because I’m thinking of purchasing this camera.

They are obviously trying to get warranty payment for their time. It is a standard practice. That is between Toyota and the dealership. The tech on the other hand shouldn't have driven like that. You have a legitimate gripe with that issue. Someone will undoubtedly be calling you with an apology. Sadly that is typical of techs. There is a reason they put a service writer in between the customer and the prima donna knuckle draggers. I once had a customer call me and ask why their car was going through the McDonalds drive through. Sure enough 5 minutes later the tech shows up with a bag in his hand and didn't think there was anything wrong with it.

    Here's a fool proof plan:
    1. Figure out if recording people without their consent is legal in your state.
    2. Tell the dealership service manager what you recorded
    3. If he/she gives you any sass, tell the general manager of the dealership of what happened, and that you'll be taking your vehicle to get serviced elsewhere
    4. ????
    5. Profit by getting your vehicle's service at another dealership

If it is a dash cam then you wouldn't exactly be recording the tech, just evidence of the activities of the tech/vehicle. If the screen came on and the camera is in full view then you should have a reasonable assumtion that they knew there was a recording occuring in the vehicle.

I took one of these, cut off half of it and epoxied it to the rexing mount. It doesnt hold the camera right up to the windshield, but it still gets a perfect view. You can remove the camera either with the factory slide mount, the pivot bolt or the gopro mount. The nice thing is depending on what version of the rexing camera you get, some use a mini usb for power just like the gopro does. So you can remove the dash cam, put in the gopro and then have power to the gopro.

This is kinda where I am at with it. I have security cameras at my house too, if no one is home, then no one is able to consent to the video. Does that mean I have to turn off the cameras when im not there? no, its my property and they are in plane sight. There is no privacy in or on someone elses property (except in a bathroom or changing room)

The dealership also has their own cameras on property that record, so there is consent to be filmed in general.

I know both of these are grey area examples, but dash cams are a relatively new thing in the US, like drones, the rules are not 100% there yet.

There's so many weird laws about recording people with and without their consent, I was just suggesting you be careful. They can claim they had no idea there was a camera that you brought onto their property. If the tech is dumb enough to whine about driving your truck up a ramp, he's probably not exactly splitting atoms enough to put together a beeping and flashing camera ("der... what dat?")

Not in this case, the camera is in his truck , also he have footage outside the shop, also what he is filming is how they abuse his own property.
I bet that there is no signage in the dealer that says no dash cam are allowed or dash cams must remain off while the car is in maintenance.

Recording video and recording audio are very different.

CA has most restrictive laws regarding all party consent for audio.

As far as getting in trouble, I don't think any prosecutor would go after someone as there is not really an expectation of privacy.

Unfortunately, I also don't think any recording would ever be admissable in any court in CA.

It's validity in any court elsewhere is also questionable since no party was able to consent.
