Jeez, that's steep. Just pull 'em off, paint them, and then put them back on. Or pull them off and put @rrentrop's replacement letters back on and go completely smooth.

 

Thinking about just buying the whole kit and spray painting them satin black before I install them

Yup I've tried, just cant, you have to stay on top of it hourly to keep up, that's just stupid fast. I'll swing by once in a while to see what's going on.
