Will any OBD II work?

 

Cancel that! That veepeak was noted to be buggy by the person that ordered and returned it.

Looked all over the web but couldn't find the Carista for a decent price and it isn't listed on the Fusion website. But the Veepeak is recommended and has almost 5 stars with over 1k reviews on Amazon. Searched Veepeak on TW too and only found positive comments. Maybe they worked out the bugs from five years ago. Thank you for all the advise though.

 

I saw this thread about a week ago, and just thought, well they must have fixed it for the 2019 models. My 2019 TRD OR has crap low end torque, and isn't smooth through gear changes (wife complained that it makes her car sick), but I just attributed that to a MT on an engine that is designed to be paired with an AT. Why else would the engine feel like it is optimized for 3500 rpm than to pair it with a AT?

Then this happened today...

I live at 4500ft elevation. I jumped in the truck, started up, pulled out the parking lot, drove about 150 meters/yards to the first traffic light, turned right and pulled away with a bit of gusto. I quickly got to probably just over 3000rpm and shifted to 2nd gear (putting me probably right around 2000rpm or so), and went to pour more right foot into it. Well, the response is exactly like when you accidentally shift into too high of a gear and stall out. I went from rapidly accelerating out of an intersection to fully stalling out. Had to put the clutch back in the keep then engine running. I was still rolling plenty fast for second gear so I just slowly let the clutch back out and slowly put gas in, and this time it made power and accelerated away normally. I can't see how I screwed that gear change up that badly, but that response just isn't safe. The poor low end torque has already had me holding it in 1st gear until through the intersection just so I can keep it going until I am clear of traffic. Now I am definitely gonna stick to that. I just don't feel comfortable making sporty entries into traffic with this truck.

Is this what other guys are experiencing? The other thing I don't like is for some reason, I can never shift into fourth and let the clutch out smoothly. There is always a shudder when I let the clutch out. Other gears seem fine, but fourth is always jumpy and I have to be so gentle letting the clutch out into fourth to avoid it. No way could I reproduce the stall out for the dealer, this was the first full stall out in 750 miles.

I'd sure love to hear opinions of others who've had issues to know if what I'm seeing can be improved. Also, this is my first post, but I positively love these forums. You guys helped me spec out my truck without so much as a question. Everything I needed to know could be found with a search.

 

That's cool. I was just going on what was said from the person in this thread.

The Carista one is about $20 or less directly from their website which also gets you a free month of the subscription service. The adapter works with any other app also.

 

Interesting. I haven't experienced anything like that stock or with the update myself, though others have said that they had experiences like that with very early 3rd Gens.

 

Welcome to TW! Your situation sounds like what my truck was doing. Almost like the ECU was letting off to much power to quickly shiffting and then hesitating powering back up. The update I had done today seemed to help but still need to test it more. That said, the applicable update is said to only be for 2016-2018. You are the first I've seen that had an issue with the 2019. That doesn't mean the issue didn't filtered to the early 2019s so I would use the info in this thread and have your dealership do a reflash of your ECU. Does anyone else know what the calibration codes should be for the 2019s?

 

I think there was a discussion about that a few pages back. You'd think it would be 04A71 or 04A72, but that is not what I am remembering.

 

The update you are referring to is in TSB 005818 (TSB = Technical Service Bulletin) for 2016-2018 which addresses a surge on auto trans Tacomas between 40 to 50 mph. However, as you can see from the 115 pages in the thread, the update also improves the MT Tacomas. The calibration code that comes stock for manuals is 8966304A7000 (04A70 for short) and the new code is 8966304A7100 (04A71 for short). The entire TSB is attached in this thread if you do a search for it.

yes. that's the falling flat on your face you keep seeing in these threads.

OV helps. a lot. massively, in fact. but my experience is that there is more to the story. this motor, with it's low displacement and low torque at low rpm requires spinning up the motor into the power to get a good upshift. this way of shifting with the OV tune is a great combo and makes me happy when i drive, every shift.

I was really thinking hard about going the OVT route but now with the Toyota flashed ECM I'm feeling the same as you describe without having paid for the tune and cable. For me it was worth sticking with a tune supported by the OEM. Not that I don't trust OV Tune's work, but I also like going OE when possible.

Having put in 100 miles today, it's not like my truck gained power or had better performance but it felt tighter and dialed in. None of the clunky shifts into 1st and 2nd, no more dead pedal, more predictable and precise throttle response, doesn't bog on inclines - in short I feel like I can finally heel-toe. What I assumed was the infamous "characteristics of the truck" turned out to be software optimizations. I actually think there's plenty of power considering the 2.8 ton weight but I don't have to over-dial it to get there now.

Hopefully the intermittent surge issue that got me the upgraded ECM in the first place is fixed too (too warm today to assume it is) but now I almost feel like it's besides the point!

 

that's great! but also consider the added torque, 25-35 ft/lbs right in the mid range where it matters. that's worth $700 or whatever in my world.

 

Yea man I totally get that. Honestly until I drove it today, it's been constantly on my upgrade list.

But I'd rather put that $700 into the kayak and rack I need for next spring!

Got the Veepeak and downloaded the Fusion OBD II app. They worked great together and now I can sleep better
