Winter Boot Suggestions

Hey Tacoma World, I'm going from Houston, TX to Banff, Canada for my honeymoon. You guys were really awesome on helping me to figure out knife laws in Canada and now it's time to look into some great all around winter boots for the trip. Average High/Low for the location I think is 33º/17º if that helps.

Budget is $200 - Outdoor Activities while there will include, but not limited to:

• Snowmobiling
• Dog Sledding
• Snow Shoeing
• Tubing
• Walking around Town
• Wolf Sanctuary
• Probably a nice dinner or two.

That being said, I'm a big fan of Keen footwear and I have my eyes on these. I think they are nice enough to keep me warm with extra socks as well as go to a nice dinner in and not be too weird.

Any and all suggestions and help would be greatly appreciated. I'm not from up North and anytime I have been, my feet have always been cold. Time to change that.

Yeah them coldies up there know a thing or two about stayin warm. Down here in Houston we just know how to sweat!

Mickey Mouse, Mucks, Sorel's, Baffin's, Kamik's or Nat's if you can find them. Or if you only need them for a week or two any Walmart special should do. I'd recommend something with a removable liner. Layering a thin pair of polypropylene or similar sock under a thicker wool sock helps wick moisture away from your feet. Wet feet will be cold feet unless you're moving. Grab a couple packs of "hot hands" - probably not widely available in Tx - but they are disposable heat packs. The insole warmers work very well and would be cheap insurance against cold feet.

Edited to say that I like Keens for hiking but I don't think I'd choose those for winter adventures up here. The Walmart cheapies won't look as cool but if it gets real cold those Keens will probably be inadequate. They'd be fine for around town but not likely for a day of dog sledding.

 

I have a different Keen Targhee that’s not as tall. They are super comfy boots. I haven’t had a chance to use them in really cold weather yet.

Have you looked at REI ? They have a decent selection and reviews.

 

Check out Merrell. I've been happy with mine in the past. You've got a good budget, so I would get Goretex, you won't regret it.

I recently switched to a lower winter boot and Mucks for when the snow is really high and I'm not walking too far. It is kind of a hassle using a higher laced boot for all activities. I'm not quite sure I like the idea of the loose boot, but people swear by them, so I'll give them a winter to see.

 

Id go with a good waterproof gortex boot and two layers of socks. I prefer Salomons and Merrells myself. Made it through a cold winter in AFG with Merrells and good socks

I used to layer socks. Assuming I'm wearing an insulated boot, I found one good pair of wool socks trumps two pair. I always keep an extra pair in the truck to change out if they get wet however. On the super cold days I get heated insoles to drop in there. You can get a 50 pack for pretty cheap on Amazon.

I go to the Sierras regularly and use a pair of Salomon Winter Boots. Throwaway heated insoles are awesomesauce. If you think your going to be in ice and shallow snow, I highly recommend a set of microspikes as well. Nothing like not sliding on an iced parking lot.

I got a decent pair from cabelas for ice fishing
Great traction and really warm price was either side of your budget . Can’t recall I not home now to take pic but they are a Cabelas brand.
They bulky though but will not fail

 

Merrell is pretty much on my shit list of footwear to avoid. The last two pairs of Merrell shoes and boots have been nothing but Payless quality at a Zappos price. I bought their stuff for over a decade and was happy until these last two pairs.
