The 2015+ WRX FA20DIT (edit - Subaru Engine Code - FA20F) uses an engine with almost 10.6:1 compression ratio and pushes 18lbs of boost stock, and having owned one, I can tell you the gauge spiked to almost 20lbs on some days. From the looks of the internals of the 2GR-FKS, the Tacoma engine will be able to handle the extra boost. Direct injection is the reason you can run high boost on a higher compression engine. Detonation is the enemy of the forced induction engine, and direct injection allows the correct amount of fuel to be injected at the top of the stroke, eliminating and/or mitigating most detonation events. On top of this, the Dual VVTi allows the compression ratio to become variable, which is how the Tacoma engine simulates the Atkinson Cycle.

It's in the first post. OVTune is going to supply a unit with the kit.

Taco boost sounds like what happens to me about 3 hours after eating Taco Bell.

Love it when Mat has time to chime in.

What RPM are we looking at for full spool? Would it be better to have higher rpms (over-gear) or keep the stock gears (under-gear).

I may not be asking it right but it would be best for cruising?

Regardless regearing will only help you out. Transmission comes stock with double overdrive (5 AND 6 are lower than 1:1 gearing), and in stock form would theoretically speaking top out at like 180 mph. That's what the gearing is designed to do, but obviously this truck doesn't have a prayer of going over about 125 or 130 without different tires and ECU changes so there's no speed limiter. Regearing will just move the power lower and allow the truck to move without feeling encumbered by it's extremely long gears which were intended to get the maximum possible fuel economy out of a 31.5" tire

I didn’t say it couldn’t be done, but you are comparing a low compression turbo engine designed for boost to a high compression NA engine that isn’t. What I’m saying is most of this thread seems to be about slapping a turbo kit on this engine with no consequences. Even with variable valve timing and direct injection, most other factory ray turbo engines run around 10:1 for a reason. I’m sure OV can get it to work, but it will be finicky and unreliable compared to a factory engine designed for boost. Especially being installed by Saturday mechanics.

Plenty of people turbo a Toyota 86 which has at least a 12:1 compression ratio. A lot of people have no issues with them until u get up around 400+ hp

A lot of people have no issues, and a lot of people do. And it will be the same here.

Hope that you know mat is designing new low compression pistons for these engines. Low boost isn’t going to be a big issue for these engines, less than 10psi. For the higher tier kit, he’s redesigning the internals a little

Where did you read that at?

Many people purposely build turbo motors with higher compression. Higher compression helps decrease spool up times, so you can make more power sooner. I wouldn't worry about the compression ratio at all. Just like Matt wrote, tuning is how you deal with high compression + boost.

I appreciate that OV is taking their time to design this system. Too bad that extra time allows all the arm-chair tuners to weigh in on how it won't work.

This thread is a shit show.

I also love how a few dudes here act like they work for OV. How about you just let Matt do the talking

As a paramedic, youtube mechanic, ham radio enthusiast, fanatical believer in "correlation = causation," and self proclaimed forensic document analyst... I confidently say that the OVturbo will be out tomorrow, convert the engine to run on nuclear fission, and get so many horsepowers that it banishes all the politicians back off of the TV screens on Nov 6th.

    What?

Edit- turbos sounds nice, my only concern is if we can get reliable Horsepower/torque and CARB Certifications.

We'll see. For example, Magnusson took forever to get their cert and unless I'm wrong, it was because of cost and time/effort (long process apparently). The TRD superchargers were made by Magnusson, for Toyota, and those TRD SC's had a cert but the exact same product with a different brand logo (i.e Magnusson) did not lol

It will meet the more stringent BARC certifications.
