tonneau cover regret

about to sell my leer 700 tonneau cover. anyone regret getting rid of theirs or needed it and not have it?

 

haha buy a 5 dollar tarp and a cargo net. thats my tonneau cover sell it so you can do more mods

 

IMO, if its the hard topper, they are a PIA. Everytime you need to haul something you need to take the whole thing off. I like to access covers that folds up.

 

yeah one of the reason why i want to get rid of it.

 

It's not that bad to remove. Between 5 and 15 minutes by yourself if you got the room in the garage. Personally, I couldn't live without it. Shopping trips once a month would be impossible to the multitudes of stores (grocery, target, costco) if I had to leave everything sitting in the back waiting to be stolen. And then it comes off a lot in the summer when firewood cutting time arrives. Mine probably goes off and on my truck at least 6 - 10 times a year. And before someone brings up the other bed cover alternatives, there were only 3 options available in Aug 05 when I needed one for a second job (Leer, ARE, and Snugtop were it at that time!).

 

My 09 came with a tri fold tonneau which is really nice. I had a snap on model on my old Taco. Never again. You couldn't snap it on in the winter months. I needed vice grips and about an hour full of bloody knuckles and swearing.

 

I couldn't live without the tonneau. I have a soft roll-up though because I need the open bed fairly frequently and live in an apartment with no place to store a hard top. Even though the soft tops don't lock, sometimes just having things out of sight is enough to keep them safe. Plus the slightly better gas mileage is a nice added bonus.

 

I have the Tri Fecta and like it, no velrco no snaps, one drawback is not having access to the whole bed without taking the whole thing off but it works for me.

 

Have you seen the Pop & Lock Tailgate Lock? If you have to open the tailgate to lift your tonneau, this might help. there is a whole thread on here that shows the installation.

X2 what Moose says, I find my undercover invaluable all of the time when using the bed as a secure storage bin. I can remove it pretty easy when having to use it for truck duty 6-10 times a year. If I know I am going to get something big, I leave it on the garage wall, it came with some nice hooks to hang it on.

If you can afford to keep it and store it when not in use, I say keep it. Especially for road trips and what not. Then you won't lose any $ by selling it as well.

 

Buyer bailed out on me looks like I'll be keeping it.

 

I liked my Undercover for the exact reason that it went on and off in about 30 seconds, and had hard cover protection (security/weather/ect) when on. I am a bit on the fence of if it's worth the 7 bills again though...

 

I have a undercover and I really like it, I need to keep a lot of $$$ electonic equipment in my bed (Scanners, O'Scopes, FDR's, several CPU's, the cover is watertight the items are out of sight, locked, and cover cannot be cut through, and the tonneau comes off in a minute.

 

I can see a tonneau being a pain if you haul large items often. I personally don't very often, and I love having the ability to store things back there and lock it up, even if they're just typical bed accessories. The times I have had to move something larger I've always known before, so it was no issue to take my cover off (it's an Undercover). I'd say even if I hauled something large once or twice a month, my cover would still be worthwhile.

Agreed, I wasn't willing to pay $700 for a new one. It took some patience and persistence, but I picked up a used one for $425. Probably could have found one for cheaper if I waited longer or drove farther.

 

so its sold now. and haven't regret it yet. but i'm looking to get something eaiser to remove and put back on.

 

Mine's just a vinyl roll-up that comes off from the outside of the truck. Even if I could strap it down from inside the bed, one sharp knife and you've got full access. I just try not to leave anything of any value in there for long. I've got a double cab though so secure storage usually isn't an issue.

 

Have you seen the A.R.E. TopUp scissor lift tonneau cover? I had never seen one before today. Cool concept.

 

I wish I had a camper shell rather than my tonneau. The only problem is the campers are easier to break into and steal my tools. Plus, you can't see what's in the bed of my truck with my cover. It was a more secure option at the time. If I ever stop carrying tools for a living, I will go open bed or Camper.

You are a genius! I've found myself taking off my Undercover 3 times this summer. I've had to hoist it by myself every time. Even though the Undercover classic is only ~55 lbs, it's the bulky size that makes it very awkward. My wife is no help. Next time I'm at the hardware store, I'm getting some hooks and do what you did. But I'll probably use a couple spare 3/4" PVC pipe that I have lying around. This is the best mod! Way cool!

 

I would never get rid of mines...its way to useful...

and when I do haul things like my dirt bike...it takes me 10-15 minutes to remove and a buddy to help lift it...

I usually just put it in my living room or spare bedroom so it doesn't damage the BSP Paint...but when I do get a house I plan on doing the same thing as 05MOOSE...
