Haha! The sauce was a huge can of tomato paste, then a seasonings packet and water.

The dough was a yeast packet, water, sugar, flour etc. once mixed we had to cut the dough and fill EVERY “pan pan” we expected to sell the night- to allow the dough to proof. The round pizzas- we just used dough balls.

both sauce and dough were mixed in the “berkel” brand mixer. Something like this:


We also made milshakes in it- just for fun, haha! Manager was cool with it; put the extra in the freezer.

Edit: we actually used real olive oil in the pan pan pizzas before we put in the dough. Also- used mozzarella/ meunster cheese blend.

We had a Double Deal Pizza in our town. Buy one get one free. I used to buy the small and then use my Canadian quarter to get free games on a Rampage Arcade.

I remember in the 70s, good ol' Strawhat Pizza made such a delicious deep-dish pizza and they baked in cornmeal into the bottom. I loved that! Probably did it to make it non-stick but it added to the pie And they had free bowls of peanuts in the shell at every table which caused shells all over the floor-part of the ambience.

I haven't been to a pizza joint since probably the mid-90s...this chat made that dawn on me. Is Straw Hat still around? Anyways back then a pizza was really good almost no matter where you went-but I do recall that I didn't care for Roundtable for some reason.
The last pizza I thought was good was Little Caesar's deep dish pan pizza. That was the mid-90s.

 

Man, Shakey's. They had a banjo band there when I was a kid and screened Charlie Chaplin and Keystone Cops movies. Then eventually they got the first gen arcade games. I think that was my first Space Invaders experience.
