Mileage between oil changes w/ Mobil 1 Syn.

Did a search and could not find anything on this. Just recently switched to Mobil One syn. in my 2003 taco V-6. Typically how long between oil changes should I go? I usually drive around town and some highway, no towing...thanks.

 

I personally go 5000 miles but its debatable and there is a thead about it somewhere

I go 5K as well, I think the oil can go further but the filter is what I want changed at 5K max.
So rather than go through half the job of changing just the filter and topping off the oil I just do it all at 5K.

 

What about short trips?

 

The majority of my trips are short trips.

 

i never went past 5k miles with regular M1 synthetic.

i recently switched to M1 EP and have pushed my changes out to 10k miles. ..my most recent oil analysis indicated i could even push it further.

 

I go 5,000 miles - which is the recommended service interval.

When I change it, the oil is really dark/dirty & that's enough to tell me that I don't want to leave it in there any longer.

I go 6-7, but use a good filter such as Mobil 1 or KN, Wix ect for the longer interval.

fyi: Amsoil recommends their 25k interval by using their oil and filters..Amsoil filter to 15k, change filter add quart then drain completely at 25k. Repeat

 

I go every 5k with Mobil 1 and I too believe it's important to use a really good filter.

Have you used the Amsoil product much? Has anyone on TW, and if so with good success? Perhaps there is a thread on TW already but since you brought it up I thought I would ask.

 

Do some research on filters. Can't go wrong with the factory toyota filters. Do some research and cost comparisons.

 

The owner's manual/maintenance guide I believe specifies 7,500 miles regular service and 5,000 hard service (stop-and-go driving, offroad, etc.) for your truck. I have on 01 with the V6, and that is what mine says. I have only had my truck since last Oct. and put Mobil 1 in soon after I got it. Still not due for the first change.

So, yes, if you do a lot of short trips, 5K would be best for you with non-synthetic oil...but a huge benefit of synthics that most people seem to ignore is extended use (which offsets higher cost). You should be able go longer with a cautious approach...

Based on all the info and research I have found, I am going to go at least 7,500 on my Mobil 1 for my typical driving needs, but I intend to go 10k and change the filter at 5 and 10 (the oil may be good, but you still need to get the particulates out). At 7,500, I am going to send it to Blackrock labs for testing. If it shows essentially no degradation, I will extend the interval to 10k on the next change, with a filter change at 5k. It just doesn't make any sense to change and dispose of oil that is well within spec and still has useful life, or to do it earlier than the factory manual's recommendation.

The OEM filters rated quite high in performance comparison tests I found online, and are half the cost of Mobil 1 and K&N filters.

Also, be aware that some folks will chime on this forum without accouting for things like they have a different truck with a different engine and different service specifications/warranty requirements and different driving styles...or they just buy into oil company and part store hype to change it at 3K. Absolute baloney. This has been my expereince.

I never bought into that 3 k oil change interval, especially with todays technology in chemistry and oil.

 

While my truck is under warranty, I'll stick with 6 months or 5000 miles like the manual says. If by some remote chance I have an engine failure, I don't want Toyota denying the claim over maintenance issues. After the truck is out of warranty, I'll just change it once a year with Mobil 1. That works out to about 8 - 10,000 miles. JMO.

Yeah, I tend to geek out a bit on this stuff. I bought the truck with 101k on it, and I have no idea what oil was in it, so I am interested in what an anlysis will tell me about the engine condition. I really don't have any concerns, though. One owner before me, and the had major service records at 30, 60, 90, including T-belt and throttle body cleanings, so there is every indication that he took care of it and likely changed the oil at specified intervals. Oh, and it runs like a top.

I've been using M1 with the Toyota Filters (which I feel is the right way to go) without really "knowing" if it is right. It seems so. Unlike Jansters experience, my oil is not really dark at 5K. Maybe I could go longer, only changing the toyota filter at 5K.

 

Has anyone else tried M1 0W-30 Advanced Fuel Economy? I'm running it on my 1996 2.7L with ~180,000 miles and I'm loving it! I don't keep track of the fuel economy, but the engine sure runs smooth and has a little extra pep.

First thing I noticed was what seems like "excessive" moisture out the tail pipe when she starts cold, never did this with other oils, from my research it seems like it might be a product of more efficient combustion in the cold engine thanks to the 0w, we don't notice it after the exhaust system gets hot, since it is better evaporated.

I do 3500 miles, drain a qt, and add a quart of Sea Foam, the oil darkens up quick after that, then I do my change at 4000.

 

I use Mobil1 10w-40. I have a remote dual oil filters w/ Temp guage set -up, so I use a total of 7 quarts in my 2.7L. I live in Las Vegas so its severe service (HOT!) 7500 mile intervals for me!
My oil temps in the 115+ degree months are at the 190 deg. range in town and max of 240 deg. going up a steep incline of several miles.
I use what I consider the best oil filters; Purolater Pure One (PL30001) oil filters (PEP Boys) as a result of a weeks worth of homework on the net for the best oil filters.
I also have a remote Auto-Trans oil filter w/ Temp guage set-up and small trans cooler fitted. (same filter.) I hope this helps.
