Diff drain plugs

So my OEM front/transfer/rear diff plugs are stripped- what is the popular aftermarket alternatives around these parts? Hopefully there are non-hex alternatives?

 

How did you manage to strip that?

I’d just get another OEM hex set.

 

There are some flat ones that use allen keys. Idk parts number though

 

Those actually strip easier. People replace those with Hex heads.

 

In some cases guys use the allens. Like it would of benefical for @eon_blue to of had that style when he tagged his diff.

 

I don’t like em. They’re prone to stripping. Much easier to weld something to a hex head if it does strip. YMMV.

 

I find a good healthy dose of stupid gets me into all sorts of predicaments. Just to be certain the threads are still good it's just the Allen key part is all messed up. Hoping to find some 'kit' of magnetic hex plugs vs get new oems

Ya I stripped the hex plug on the front diff a few weeks ago...

 

i find the allens to actually hold up better. people just dont make sure the holes clean with a pick and they dont have the tool all the way in.

 

Use OEM. Use a 6-point wrench or socket with breaker bar, not 12. Use the correct aluminum or steel crush washers on respective materials.

The shop I used to work at had 19mm plugs we used for replacement. I replaced all my drain and fill plugs simply because I hated the stock ones for how easy it is to strip the heads on them! The 19mm plug actually has a head on it that fits the whole boxed end of a wrench.

 

Got a source for them?

 

If you're munching up your drain plug on the trail, replace with a new one and get a skid plate.

If you're munching it up trying to take it off, get a properly fitting tool.

 

I couldn't tell ya. They were ordered from one of our distributor clients that sold us oil, filters and the like.
