    It's a start but...
    $52K price tag
80 miles empty? Full? Towing max? Guarantee its empty for 80 miles. Load it with a 5K trailer and now you measure battery life in feet.
Then you have a itty bitty BMW.

This truck is designed for urban, short haul light payloads, like a delivery truck. Ask it to pull 4K for 500 miles which our truck will do no problem.
Again, it's a start. Battery is the issue.

Ford had a problem with the Ranger and let it compete against trucks like the Tacoma in its final years and lost big time. They made the decision to exit the market and let the F150 entry levels compete on price.

Probably lost a bundle, but once you realize your truck is outdated it is very expensive to catch up and skipping a generation may be the best bad decision

I think you make very good points, but let me add a different perspective.

Buying a 2015 Tacoma this past Sept. was crazy expensive so I opted for a new 2018.

I get a $1000 amonth stipend for driving my truck which has to cover gas and all incidentals

In approx 24 to 36 mo will have 36 to 48k mi on a good looking TRD OR and be looking to sell.

If the 2022 Tacoma is still 3rd gen, I won't consider it at all. I will sell my 18 with what's left of the 70k warranty using the value as down payment because I think interest rates will be noticably higher.

If the 2022 is 4th gen, it will need to have a radio at least up to 2018 standards (the 2018 Tacoma does not), power seats and a MF locking tailgate.

By that time, the Ranger Raptor may be an option or maybe Ford makes a better looking (Raptor looking) competitive priced 150 or Ranger.

A hybrid with drive by wire torque would be an awesome OR truck. Drone technology has given us software that can control and monitor 4 motors independently. OMG imagine a scenario where your truck had a motor on each wheel hub.

Ok I dreamt a little dream there.

Wait until the comparison advertisements Ford comes out with against the Tacoma. The only thing the Tacoma wins is horsepower......in a truck...o_O

Might be getting too old for this.
There will probably be a new power-train developed for the 2022-25 model year whenever the new MPG fuel regulation goes into effect. Also, it will take that long for Toyota to decide if they are still happy with their place in the market.

I'm on board with that. If that actually were to happen my 2018 sport would be going bye bye to make room for the diesel

Never been a fan of green on vehicles, but you may have just changed my mind...

I love the green. But a 3rd Gen would not look good in green.

The grey headliner in my 2nd gen is bad but I can't stand the black on the 3rd gens... like driving a cave! Wh not lighten up the interior color palette a bit

Would not be surprised if there is no manual option for the 4th gen Tacoma.

Just a gen2 TRD shift knob so far. Anxiously awaiting ovTune 1.05 with handheld tuner!
The Ranger is doing great things for the mid-size truck segment, period.

With more mid-sized back on the road, it'll only entice full-size buyers who hate parking lots and car buyers looking for vers-utility space. Win win for the Taco's future.
