    The breather is supposed to be a 1 way valve and in normal driving functions as such but when you go off road dirt gets stuck in the metal cap and causes it to just stay open giving water free communication with your diff oil. If it goes on too long you get the peanut butter diff oil. A breather is a cheap mod to just do for piece of mind.

    I hear you, I'm not saying you are wrong about going to a beefier rear axle. I'm just surprised/amazed at people blowing cv's/diffs on 35's on stock components meanwhile people are saying fuck it and going to 37's on same said stock components.

    I’ll stick with 35’s.

    I would be interested in swapping to a 4.30 gear ratio though... it would help with the hwy RPM’s.

    Curious to see the axle swap Tim, my offer is open if you’d like to try out the crawlbox at some point - it’s a game changer.

    That's squarely on the driver. Good, Bad or indifferent, different people beat up machines differently. And that's something with a lot of data backing it up from the aviation world.

    Thanks Craig. I’m trying to swing both. See what happens I guess.

    Considering I need to have the rear DS shortened for the 9” anyway, and I’m already redoing the twin sticks. It only makes sense to do the Narlun now.

    On the other hand, it’s hard to ignore the fact that I could build an entire XJ for what this is going to cost. Especially when you factor in the 37s and Marlin steering rack when its released.

    In her back of my mind, I know it’s smarter to just fix the Taco and sell it...

    What part? Its a 1 way valve that lets pressure out as it heats and cools and blah blah blah. Dirt gets in and cap gets stuck and sucks in water as the housing cools and then you get water in the diff.

    From my google mechanics reference library:

    As heat builds up in the diff, it raises the pressure of the fluid and the internal air. This expansion needs to go somewhere. The air exits through the breather.

    Once the diff is dunked into cold water, the reverse happens very quickly, and a negative pressure is created, and water is sucked into the breather and into the diff which is horrible.

    If the breather is relocated up high enough, then air is sucked into the diff, which is not horrible.

    No stuck dirt needed in any of these scenarios. Only positive or negative air pressure.

    Also, let's not forget that since it's a '1 way valve' after heating up and the expansion, if you dip your diff in water - even below the vent, whatever Lloyd explained before will happen, and water could be sucked into the diff through the gasket.
