After doing some more reading on FRS, GMRS, and MURS, I think we should use one of the five MURS frequencies. We're less likely to run into any traffic or have a frequency monitored where we're going.
    • 151.8200
    • 151.8800
    • 151.9400
    • 154.5700
    • 154.6000
"MURS is licensed by rule. This means an individual license is not required for an entity to operate a MURS transmitter if it is not a representative of a foreign government and if it uses the transmitter in accordance with the MURS rules outlined in 47 C.F.R. Part 95 Subpart J."

Individuals don't need a license, but equipment needs to be certified by the FCC; Baofeng radios are not certified.

More information about MURS can be found on the FCC website.

As a "Plan B," we can use the FRS frequencies, which are also "licensed by rule."

Can I just get a hand held one instead of rigging up a CB? If so any semi cheap ones you would recommend?

    Really? Why?

It worked when I tested an FRS frequency between two of my radios. I've read a bunch on people using their Baofengs on FRS and MURS frequencies.

The baofengs work on any frequency. Other “legit” brands (kenwood, yaesu, etc) don’t. At least my yaesu has transmit only available on ham frequencies, but it can listen all other frequencies

nope. cb wont work with the ham frequencies. I think @2BeersPlease was asking why a handheld ham wont work since you implied they wont.

I thought you were referring to the FRS/MURS frequencies.

The quote link works well for reducing confusion.

Ive been trying to pick up a hand held HAM but cant get what I want till after the trip. If anyone is willing to let me borrow one id love to try one before I buy one. Ive never messed with HAM before. Also I'm the new guy in this thread so I figure I should tell a little about myself.... I'm local to the Fresno/Clovis area my whole life. I spend a lot of time in the shaver area with my wife at the family cabin and have done bald 6ish times but over a span of like 10 years. I'm the sales manager at Marlin Crawler, I drive a 99 extra cab with a 4.7 taco box 35s and lockers front and rear (rear ARB is leaking and not working right now) I have on board air (happy to air you up if needed but I'm leaving Saturday early) just put on a RTT so this will me a new exp. for me getting used to the extra weight up high and also dealing with the extra parts to hit trees with. Truck is IFS with a 3 inch uniball upper lift. Looking forward to meeting everyone, this will be my 1st get together from TW. I will be at crestmans at 10 am on Friday.
