    Hey everyone-

Just had my 275/75r16 duratracs c-loads installed. As expected they are louder and howl a bit as speed gets higher.

The tire place told me one of my wheels needed 10 weights to balance to zero. Said it’s balanced but that’s a good amount of weights. I asked if I should have it replaced, but he said ride around and see how it feels. I don’t have any vibes or shims that I noticed. Should I get the tire replaced or will it be fine? He said sometimes they work themselves out. He put it in the rear. My other rear looks to have 6-7 weights.

What’s a normal amount? Are duratracs known for this? Any help appreciated.

Depends on the weight of them. If the weights are 1/4 ounce each then that's only 2.5 ounces in total which is pretty typical. The fact that you're not feeling any vibration in the seat leads me to believe there's nothing out of the ordinary.

For reference, the general consensus of what is too much weight is when it takes more than 1% of the assembly weight (tire and wheel) to bring it into balance.

I actually bought from you guys, and was going to contact you directly. I’m not sure which weights they used. Is there a quick way to find out? I assume if they are the heavier weights you guys would replace the tire?

The fact the tire shop guy called it out leads me to believe it’s not normal...

10 weights? Get a new tire guy. That’s nuts.

Usually when a tire needs a lot of weight you pop it off and rotate it on the rim. Many times it fixes the issue.

How large looking (long) are the weights?

Or get a pic of them and someone will be able to tell you.

It was from a well name tire place. But these guys do this all day so I’m assuming they would do whatever needed to be done.

Is there a negative to it? I first want to know if there is an issue with the tire of course.

Get it up to 70 or so. My duratracs were fine most of the time. As soon as I got on the freeway, that's when they vibrated like crazy. My balance issue was never figured out, so I avoided the freeway when I had others in the car. I got used to it, but I didn't have to drive the freeway very often. I probably could have spent more time at the tire shop dialing it in, but I just got tired of going there.

I got her to 60-70 and it wasn’t vibrating that bad but there. Figured it was the nature of these loud beastly tires

Here are the weights. Have little zeros on them or something.

Did you need a lot of weights? And is it normal to go back and ask them to balance them better? They used a big digital machine and said they got it to zero

on a side note.. make sure those duratracs are rotated on a regular basis or they will wear funny.

had them on my cherokee.. little sound when first installed then they got quiet. never any kind of vibration or anything up to speeds of 70-80mph. you shouldn't get a vibration from them at all in my opinion..

mine were balanced and only had weights on he inside of the rim. none of that stick on crap.

Hold on a minute. Let's say for the sake of illustration that the wheel+tire combo weighs 75 lbs. One percent of that would be over 11 oz. of weight. No way would I accept that.

OP, on the other hand if those are 0.25 oz. weights with the total being around 2.5 oz. I would not freak about that as I have seen that on a few of my tires a couple of times. If it really bothers you take it back and have them balance it on the Hunter Road Force Elite machine that is showing up in many DT places.

10 weights at .25 each which is 2.50oz completely fine.

Thing is IDK what weights they are. Can you guys tell from the pics? I’m getting a slight wobbly sounding hum towards the rear but I also know these tires are supposed to howl and be somewhat noisy.

ejwels, the weights are .25 oz each so 10 would be 2.5 ounces as mentioned which is well within range for this tire.

    Thank you for your business.

Thanks. You can tell from those pics I attached? I called the tire place and the service manager said "i have no idea what the installer used, I'd need to see them".

They clearly show they're 1/4 oz weights.

Lol yes just zoomed in. Guess I’m ok then. Just wondering why the guys pointed out he had to use 10 weights as if it was not good?
