Damn frayed front ring cable got me good on my tri yesterday. Not painful per se, but annoying. Like an ingrown toenail or a big splinter.

8sp, you say? Just get another Acera (or Altus). Pay no attention to the guys promoting a 1x drivetrain. 3x8 still works great. Front derailers are stupid simple and rarely fail, so that talk about "simplicity" of a 1x drivetrain is non-sense. What you DO get with a 1x drivetrain is a compromise in gear range. Even with the Eagle stuff.

I actually liked the 8sp's of old. Pretty stout stuff and rarely failed for me (not withstanding bending/breaking the RD hanger).

x2. No point in spending more money than you have to. Just replace the broken derailleur and ride your bike!

What does "breaking trail" mean? Are you doing trail work? Or talking snow?

Lots of choices here. Highly dependent on what your goals are and terrain you ride on. Any hardtail 29er will fit the bill pretty well. Or if you are more into touring type of riding, something like a Salsa Fargo or Specialized AWOL or TREK 920 would do as well. Fat tires and drop bars.

Living with the hitch rack right now. Got my yakima rails mounted to bed this weekend. New crossbars will be here this week so can mount my 1up trays above the bed. 20181105_182058.jpg

Going where there is no trail. Forest. Never tried winter biking, but sounds interesting since i do cross country skiing in the winter.

Please stick to the trails. Unless you’re in the outer skirts of Alaska or some remote minimally populated areas. Mt bikers going off trail and destroying the land gets us in trouble. Sucks “breaking trail” anyway.

If you want to ride on snow. You need a fat bike. Especially on those xc ski trails where some areas won’t let you ride if you have less than 4” tires. Fat bikes are versatile as you can fit regular mountain bike wheels in them for summer riding. Love mine.

Is this your first FS bike purchase? How much experience do you have on technical trail / terrain?

Road trip to Virgin, St George, Hurricane and SLC. Lots of great riding and scenery. The truck did very well for its first road trip from SoCal.

Can’t speak for the cannon, but I’ve had time of both the giants. Very different options. The Trance is a do it all kinda bike. The Reign is more enduro, prefers long nast DH style riding, will pedal if necessary.
