That's amazing! I don't check my mileage anymore, here in Northern California (above SF) you cant go a mile without hitting a hill or mountain, I gave up!

Well actually going up and down the mountains as I went across North Carolina, I averaged 24 there and then back. About 70 miles I think... And that included a lot of sections where I was using engine braking and also keeping her out of overdrive to climb up the hills without lugging her and also to go down without burning the brakes.

I don't know about a 4x4 but the Prerunner can totally get at least 20-22 on average if driven gently.
and when I say gently I don't mean like hypermiling or anything like that, I mean just driving casually

    Cab configuration?

Absolutely no topping off multiple clicks when filling?

    Ethanol free gas?

    Tire size?

I could never get that fuel economy. Gas mileage starts dropping off when I go over 60mph.

    • Double Cab short bed prerunner
    • No topping off, as soon as she clicked I pull out the nozzle.
    • 10% ethanol (gross I know)
    • 16" stock size, I'd have to look but whatever the factory size is.

Speed was 55 mph for what I estimate to be 95% of the drive.

I know that many of us don't drive at 55mph. But not all of us drive at 80 or 85mph either. We're all somewhere in the middle for the most part. l personally stick around 65mph if the speed limit says l can go that. l stay in the right lane and keep out of everyone's way. I've gotten just a fraction under 24mpg.
Giving someone a hard time because they got 28 mpg from basically a brick going down the highway, is a bit harsh in my opinion.
Some of us get 16mpg (or less!). Some of us can get 24mpg. And some can get up to 28 mpg. Says a lot about the diverse uses of the truck, and of its diverse owners. Some are lifted. Some are factory height. We're all different. But we all drive Tacomas.
l'm still impressed that someone got 28 mpg though!!!!

This whole thread makes me super happy. I’m moving from a diesel getting 12-14mpg. $.75 a gallon cheaper and 3-8mpg. I’ll be in heaven!

I average just a hair over 20 mpg according to my ODBII reader.

I’ve gotten over 100 mpg for a few seconds coasting down a steep hill at a high speed, lol.
