2002 Tacoma base speaker upgrade

I have an 02 tacoma base that I have changed the radio on but i am not happy with the music quality of the stock speakers. What is the best speakers to buy that can fit back into the front doors and rear of the truck?

 

The best speakers?probably Focal Euphoria's or something like that. But I'm not sure if you want to drop $1300 per pair on speakers.

I recently did a set of Kicker KS 6.6" components up front, and the KS 6x8 coaxials in the rear. Client was happy, but is probably going to have me add an amp to them soon.

Do you have the full double-cab, or just the extended cab

Ok with the extended cab you'll have 6.5's in the rear.

Just do yourself a favor and do components up front so you can replace the tweeter. Stock tweeters are terrible, but you don't want to just do coaxials and have all the sound playing into your ankles.

Look into some 5 channel amps. A good budget option is the pioneer gm-d9605. This will power all 4 door speakers as well as a hefty subwoofer channel.

The '02 x-cab has 5x7 cutouts front and rear - not 6.5.

Agreed that the stock tweets are awful, but having the mid and high frequencies coming from below isn't necessarily a bad thing. Many serious SQ vehicles place everything down low. There are detrimental effects actually resulting from separating the midwoofer/midrange and tweeter. The closer they are to one another the better. A good coax can also eliminate the need for time alignment if not using a sub and greatly simplify it if using a sub. The big downside with a coax is reduced woofer cone area and usually a compromise with the tweeter.

The real issue is the lack of choices in a 5x7 driver. I know of 2 decent choices (JL C5 and ID XS57) and a whole bunch of junk. The ID can actually be used as a coax or separates - using a removable phase plug on the pole piece. Way more options open up to you with an adapter, but it's going to take some work to shoehorn in a 6.5.

 

At least for what we have on file, The xtra-cab (rear seat but no rear doors) normally has a 6.5"


If your rear speaker looks different than this, then your truck may have something else.
I've seen some models have a 5x7 in the front where there is normally a 6x8.

I think saying there are "detrimental effects" from separating the woofer/tweeter might be a bit dramatic in our particular usage. I think for the people asking for help with audio on this forum, they probably will be fine doing components and using the stock tweeter location.
My tweeters are all the way on the dash, pointing up at the windshield. I do not find this "detrimental" to the sound I wanted

 

The most expensive speakers you're willing to pay for!

In all honesty, it all depends on your budget. Kicker, Alpine, JBL, are a few of the main brands we sell that you really cant go wrong with. They'll all be better than stock.
That being said, once you break the $50-$75 range on a pair of speakers, it's time to start looking at amps. No use buying pricey speakers and then under-powering them with the tiny factory head unit power

 

I believe that's the '01 and before that had the 6.5 cutout. Still a 1st gen but not quite the same truck. Maybe some of them used a 6.5, but that'd be news to me.

Of course components will be fine, but just pointing out that coax still works very well and can greatly simplify installation without compromising much if anything in the way of sound quality.

 

Sorry to hijack again OP but I've also got an '02 and for some reason no component tweeters are coming up as a plug'n'play fit on crutchfield. Is there something weird about the tweeters for this truck that make them an unusual size?

 

The stock tweeters are dinky - maybe why you can't find a direct fit. I think the space available is almost generous for the location though. I managed to fit a set of Stereo Integrity M25s in there. They're 30mm deep with a 44mm cutout. Had to make a spacer, but you get 20mm of depth from the factory and it's easy to trim out the door card a little if needed.





Err, if you wanted to keep it hidden, I'm pretty sure these could fit behind the factory grill & seem pretty close to what comes in the stock kit in diaphragm size (~10mm).
