    need the model# and brand.
If it's a programmable thermostat, it will most likely take a battery to power it.
The two wires are connected to the thermocoupler output on the t-stat.
You won't use all the connections.
There may be switch on the back of the T-stat for Elec/gas.
    G is for Fan relay
    Y is for cooing compressor
    W is Heating control
    RH is Heating transformer
    RC is cooling transformer
If your existing one just has the two wires, you'll just need to attach one wire to the W connection, One wire to the RH connection and a jumper between the RH and RC.
If you took note of the original connection, and if it was wired right by the HVAC monkey, the white wire will be the gas valve, W, and the red will go to the RH.
Here is mine for reference, it uses 2 AA batteries, haven't changed them in about 5 years and they are still going strong.

I mean $15k for all the "upgrades" seems pretty reasonable if they're paying 4wd parts $150/hr to bolt on that stuff lol

What am I doing wrong. Did they not wire these where I should isolate the red and plug in the black like the old ones? That didn't work as I thought what mow

those may be hot. Don't get zapped.
Looks like a simple Normally open circuit that turns the heater on when the contacts are closed.
Connect one black wire to T1 and the other black wire to L1, then cap off the unused wires on the thermostat.

Not responsible for your death or burning your house down. :D

The funky smell may just be dust burning off the heating element if it's the first time it's been used this season.

That is not a low voltage thermostat like @Deathbysnusnu was thinking.
    That's a line level thermostat. It's basically a switch.
I hope you turned off the power at the breaker.
Did you really let the magic blue smoke out?

Edit: he beat me to it

Your instructions spell it out pretty well.
Don't tie the reds together. Put a wire nut on each. Connect the black as the old one.
Don't bathe with a plugged in toaster.

Or.... you could split the white wires in the box and connect one to each of the red wires. That would break both sides of the circuit when you turn the switch all the way to off.

Disregard all of that, I'd need a continuity meter to see which of those are making or breaking.
    I'd call @teamhypoxia .

Whatever you do, don't contact a qualified electrician. They're all about "safety" and "doing things right"
Much better to consult a bunch of dickheads on a truck forum.

When I was a kid we had our kitchen remodeled. I was watching an electrician install a few outlets and switch when ZAP! He's like "I knew I forgot something" I was actually kind of scared as an 8 year kid and now I'm afraid of doing electrical work haha

Figured that too. Just hard to believe the person doesn’t know how to add it all up.

Here’s another sweet setup. Has everything, 2018, wants to buy a house now.
