Sure, I still can but I'm still working on the electrical so had it off.

 

Current development with my truck: started it up tonight, started running/idling extremely rough. Attempted to drive it a short distance and it has no power and is vibrating excessively. Check engine light came on, but I don't have a scanner to read to code(s) currently. I'm thinking it's possibly misfiring, maybe a bad coil or injector. Any thoughts? BTW, its a 3.4 auto

 

Well I’m under my truck and see this.
Is this a leaking brake cylinder or a rear axle seal issue?
Oil is only on the outside section as shown
Guess I will take the drum apart tomorrow

 

AutoZone will read and diagnose the codes for you free of charge. They will even give you a print-out of them if you so desire.

 

Yeah I have a friend that has a code scanner, will borrow it tomorrow and see what codes it's throwing. Just wondering if anyone had any ideas on what it could be.

Just started acting up tonight. Its been running great, no previous issues.

 

Has anyone fixed loose auto shifter? I have a 1996 4Runner shifter, and it has quite a lot of play. Sometimes it pops out of gear if you lightly knock into it with your arm. It's also difficult to tell if you're in Neutral or Drive at time since the shifter is so loose.

 

Axle seal would be my guess too. If it is gear oil, the smell will be distinctive. When the seal goes, it usually smart to replave the bearing as well. Also, the brakes will have taken on gear oil and are ruined.

As Monte mentioned, if one side has gone, the other side is not far behind.

Gear oil has a pretty distinct smell. How's you brake fluid level look?

Did my trans fluid....including dropping the pan and new "strainer". $128.00 all in. Did the job myself.

 

Mine had a similar problem recently, it started suddenly too. Luckily I was about a mile from the house so I limped/coasted home. Your description sounds very similar to what mine was doing.

ScanGauge said it was a P0304 code or a misfire on cylinder 4. That was on the non-coil side (driver). If yours is the same side you can determine if it’s the coil feeding it by starting the truck, pulling the spark plug wire on the misfiring cylinder and holding it next to the engine block. If it sparks then it’s not the coil. When I did it I had spark but it was coming out of the side of the boot. Bad boot.

I replaced plugs and wires. CEL went off, runs like a champ.

Here is a good DIY thread, not that it’s complicated or anything but he does give you the diagram for which wire goes to which coil and cylinder which can be useful if you cross it up.

The 4Runner I pulled it from had like 300k, so it makes sense that those bushings would be shot.

 

Well hell ya! Scored this on an Amazon Warehouse deal (open box) for 46 bucks. Just happened to look tonight... I don't normally get that lucky.


That's one more part for the 4x conversion.
