Gen 2 Rusty Frames?!

Hey guys.. New to the forum! I was wondering how many of you have had problems with rust on the frame!? I recently bought an 08 that is a west coast car and noticed there is a good amount of rust on the frame at ALL the welds and some spots on the frame! I have an appointment next week to take it in since it only has 44k miles on it and I have the platinum warranty with CPO.

I know there was a recall for pre-2000's but this could be a problem with ours too. Other than that... I love this damn truck!!

Anybody else had issues/problems with this?!

I'm starting to see surface rust here and there on my '06.

 

The rust your truck is experiencing is due to the insufficient paint job it received from the factory.

There are some folks around here who have taken the initiative to try to fix it themselves by painting or coating their frames with aftermarket products.

Talk to forum member "nad"....he's got some significant rust issues. His pictures will make you feel better....or possibly worse...

 

I think toyota enjoys buying back old rusty trucks, otherwise they would have painted the frame better after the gen 1 frame disaster.

 

Unless you have rust to the extent of having holes caused by it, Toyota will not warranty rust issues on the 2nd Gens.

Thanks guys. It is just surface rust and there are products I have used in the past that have stopped the rust and turned it back to an oxidized metal. I will post up after I talk to the dealer. Ill keep the thread updated but rumor has it that the recall might go to the newer trucks also!

 

I declined the rustproofing the dealer offered. I instead applied my own, I also undercoated the truck my self. Let me tell you I loaded the truck in every nook and cranny. It dripped for a good 2-3months.

 

What products do you all recommend for touching up rust spots? I'm planning on brushing off the light rust spots and hitting it with some sort of rust-resistant paint. I'm not really concerned, but if I can keep it looking good, I will.

 

POR15 is the only product I have had success using on rust with my Jeep projects. Everything else will come thru or bubble over time.

 

Bought a used 2003 and later found everything underneath was rusted then painted over. Called Toyota and they informed me of a recall. Had an inspection last week and after they sent photos to Toyota rep he approved Frame Replacement and all related parts.

The dealer said it included the Frame, Bushings, Springs, Shocks, Muffler and 30 pages of other parts to be replaced free of charge.

Yes, it sucks to be going through this but the dealer says its about $12K worth of new parts going into the vehicle. So they're gonna give me a rental to use while they replace everything.

I will post before and after pics along with the parts list if they'll let me copy it.

Not sure how all will turn out but you gotta give Toyota credit for this considering it's an '03 and I am the 2nd owner.

 

I have a 2008 Access Cab with 14,000 miles on it. My frame is rusting and my driveway has rust spots all over it from the truck. Between this and the wind noise, I am done with Toyota. My next truck will be a GMC.

I have had five trips to the dealer for the wind noise and they cannot fix it. Toyota corporate told me that there is nothing more that they can do for me. I had to have my rear springs replaced at 10,000 miles.

All a person has to do is read this forum for a little while and you can see that these trucks are not all that they are cracked up to be. I wish I would have found this forum before laying down my hard earned money for this truck.

I purchased my tacoma on Dec 15, 2004. This week the portion of the frame in wich the motor is mounted caved in on itself! 5 years old and my truck is written off . I am waiting to hear back from Toyota Canada and my dealer. I had a "lifetime" rust rotection by sym-tec applied when purchased. I thought at the time that it may be a waste of money and now I know that it was. This is unbelievable!!! The truck has been well taken care of with surface rust on the frame at a minimum... except for that area in which the motor was attached! I will keep you all posted.

That does sound like good Toyota Quality, however, here the majority vote is that all rust issues are caused by terrible owners who should not own a Toyota, or terrible governments that attempt to make roads safer. Either way Toyota engineering is not to blame since these trucks are designed in Japan, by much higher intelligent beings then those from either the United States or Canada (for those of you from the North Country). So taking that point "Sir you owe Toyota an apology for driving that truck in bad weather. It was not designed to be driven in the snow, ice, or even rain."

 

That actually might have been what caused it. You have to be the first 2 gen to have this problem. What did that stuff look like? Could water possible get behind it ?

 

Maybe? Have you gone back to them on their life time warranty?
