200,000 Mile Club (1st Gen Tacomas)

So I hit 221,000 on the Taco, which hasn't had any problems, I just bought another truck...I know I know its a ford, but it has 240,000 and runs like a beast. My taco is 3.4L this beast is 7.5L!!! I still like the Tacoma 25 times more, better gas mileage(15 vs 5), offroading, etc... would you buy a ford??

Just about to roll 315,000 on my 1999.

 

I am new here.... I have a 1998 Sr5 4x4 xtra cab with 290,500 miles.

A little background on the truck: Purchased from a coworker whose wife was on him about having too many vehicles. He owned it 19 years but it was starting to get in disrepair because of family issues. It was mostly in need of basic maintenance (brakes, hoses, coolant flush, e-brake cable), new valve cover gasket, engine and transmission mounts, wheels/tires, & radio/speakers/antenna.

The previous owner was careful to not let it get many scratches and the interior is very clean.

I had test drove other trucks which I found intimidating (I'm a car person usually) but the little Tacoma had my heart!

 

My 99 has 336,000. Runs like a champ. A lot of times theyre rebuilt motors. So sometimes that's just body mileage. My dad owns an 82. Said he turned 220,000 the other day. That truck has been his daily driver since he bought it in 83. I hope I inherit that truck.

223k on my 02 & just passed smog. Fuel economy is maintaining & feels stronger than last 3rz that only had 100k and headers (maybe the 5 speed v auto). Purchased at 160k couple years ago. Driven hard on and off road from 15° to 115°. I love this truck but honestly abuse it a little. She doesnt mind

Other than oil changes/air and oil filters, and regular consumables (tires battery bulbs wipers) I upgraded to tundra 13wl calipers, replaced shocks/coils, leaves, LCA bushings, outer tie rod ends, upper lower ball joints, steering rack bushings, added rear sway, replaced dash/climate bulbs, window and door latches, seat belts, (weather stripping, clutch & upholstery still rugged). All were at the end of their lives, looked like oem's from 02 despite toyotas claims of compete service history.

All that said, I'm out probably $4-5k after about $10k purchase. I could have afforded a 3rd or 2nd gen or a lower mileage 1st gen. So why older & higher miles? I'm with many others on here that these first gens are a sweet spot of automotive engineering. Power to weight ratio, on and off road handling, dependability, affordability, availability of parts, and before the bigger size of the 2nd gens (good for city, trail and fuel). Also before the electronics and sensors got out of hand, and thankfully after the obseletion of the 22re. And theyre easy to work on given others today.

So is a high mileage 1st gen a good idea? They're freaking GOLD imo. 2nd one ive owned. I'll replace this 3rz with another when that time comes or maybe an electric motor, and I'll be in a more or less brand new 02, mechanically speaking. So for my day to day (small construction business, haul wood, camping/hunting/skiing/surfing/adventuring, mtn to cities to beach, and the odd river ford, theres no better daily driver

 

Just picked up this gem. 99 4x4 factory sunroof 201k.

 

My 00’ currently has 223k. Bought it with 133k, supercharged at 158k. I run it hard and it doesn’t bat an eye

 

'01 with 224,000. Bought it in '08 when the big recall was in it's first stage (up to '00). Brought it to a friend to give it a once over before I made it official & he guesstimated that by the end of the year the recall would be extended to the rest of the 1st gens.... Sure 'nough I got the new frame in '10.
While there are some things I have shied away from fixing myself either due to not steppin' out enough or not having the necessary set-up/tools/etc. (just realized how those were opposing ends of the spectrum.... not stretching the limits vs knowing them....), this first reason has lost its power bit by bit.... So besides reg oil changes, etc., I have done the carrier bearing, tranny mount, body mounts, ignition coils, just painted the frame & a complete front brake job (well, still working on the bleeding issues).... Outsourced shocks, muffler, catalytic converter & a ball joint.... Minimal body rust. One spot over the passenger wheel well that I stay on top of....
& my previous vehicle was an '86 which I had to retire at 365,000 due to the frame. I had it welded three times & she just couldn't take much more of that. She sits happily at my brother in-law's farm alongside a few other retired, yet not forgotten, rides....

 

mine is a newly purchased 2001 Tacoma double cab 4x4, 237,000+ on it and the trans still shifts well, engine is runs like a top, i just had the power steering pump take a dump but it wasn't too hard to replace. i've replace outer tie rod ends and i will have to do a full refresh on the suspension all around but other than that it's a great truck. oh yeah and the dash water temp gauge doesn't work but i plan on installing a mechanical gauge anyway to get more accurate temp readings.

 

99 bought it with 287k+ now going on 316 and still running like a champ

 

Hit a milestone driving back home from college this weekend. Purchased the truck last July with 187K on the clock.

 

Mine is an 2002 DCSB TRD 4x4 w/ 248,000 and climbing since it’s my daily. Keep up on your maintenance and don’t buy cheap parts. Found out the hard way with lower ball joints what a headache. Lesson learned. Only the best for it. The truck has treated me well and I sing it’s praises to anyone who will listen.

 

Did you have aftermarket LBJs that failed? Getting ready to replace mine in the coming weeks.

 

Yeah, went with some from online. The threads stripped on the driver’s side and the castle but broke the cotter pin as it slid off. I was fortunate that it was low speed in a round-about. But it broke the UBJ and pulled off the brake line. No body, wheel, or tire damage though. I replaced the UCAs w/ Camburg uni-balls and went with Toyota LBJs.

 

My dads got an old first gen in his garage that has 380,xxx miles. Those things are built to last for sure.

 

Yup, just like mine as well. I’d be surprised for him to tell me he did NOT have a specific tool in there. Ya know? It’s funny the stuff we remember...
