    Hey everyone,
Today it was brought to my attention by a friend, that rough country released a inline speedometer calibrator for our 3rd gen Tacoma’s. I’m unsure if he saw it at SEMA this past week but here’s the link:

    https://www.roughcountry.com/speedometer-calibrator-90043.html

Cheaper option than Hypertech. I’m in definite need of a calibrator from larger tires and regear. Just never could justify 240+ shipping to Hawaii for a hypertech.

Any thoughts? Or any of you made it to SEMA and have any details on this?

I’ve read hypertech reviews from TW stating to actually measure the tire, and leave gear ratios out of the equation. Just wondering if this product would be similar with the setup.

    Thanks

Seems legit, hopefully someone will post a review comparing it to the Hypertech unit

Changes shift points based on tire diameter. Very promising. Unfortunately can’t be sold or used in California . Arggggg!

Very interesting that this says it changes the shift points....

I just sent them an email to verify that it changes what the ECM sees.

Guys on the ovtune thread said the hypertech unit does not change what the ECM sees.

I’ll probably end up buying it, doing some logging with tech stream, then return it if it actually doesn’t change what the ECM gets.

I don't see how this does anything besides updating the cluster display. The ECU still sees the speed from the wheel sensors first.

Appears to install in the same manner as the HyperTech module, so I'm unclear as to how this can update the ECM.

I agree. It T’s into the same spot as the hypertech. Similar small little black box module too

Just take it out prior to inspection lol

I don’t understand that part either. But a cheaper alternative to hypertech, yet achieve the same goal is nice for me haha. My mpg data per trip is affected since everything is off. My SR5 came stock with 245’s and I’m on 285’s now with 4.88’s

gears don't effect the speedometer display in the cluster, only tire height.

I got a feeling this thing doesn’t touch the ECU..

The install instructions are the exact same as the hypertech, they even use a hypertech module in the first pic #730123. That being said, the pic at the top of the page looks nothing like the hypertech other than the module. Something seems a little fishy.

Edit: The only tacomas that pull speed from the transfer case are 2005-2011 manual Tacoma, so gears will affect the speedo. The rest all gets read from the ABS sensors so it won't have any affect.

Assuming third gens are the same as second gens, gear ratio does affect the speedometer on manual transmissions. Autos read speed based off ABS sensors and manuals based off driveshaft revolutions.

I just did a search to see if I could find an answer one way or another but didn't come up with anything 3rd gen specific.
