When two consenting adults love each other very very much they give each other a special hug and 9 months later a baby is born....

At least that’s how I explain it to my kids.

Nothing like an interaction with a cop and his attitude to set your mood for the morning. This has been bugging me all morning and I need to get it off my chest. Not trying to start a heated debate or cop bash. Just relaying my experience because I think it's becoming a more and more common one.

I lack the literary skill to convey the total experience in text, but I left the encounter feeling it didn't have to go that way. I was polite and accepted responsibility for the violation. Issue the ticket so we can get on with our days. It could have just been straight business from beginning to end. But it wasn't. He chose to take it a different direction for some reason. Totally unnecessary. Does nothing to improve public relations. Fucked up my attitude for my whole commute.

A Sac PD motorcycle cop was posted up about halfway up the on ramp I usually take to work ticketing people for making an illegal right turn. For years, there was no sign there. About two or three years ago, the city installed new traffic controls and repainted crosswalks. Not sure why since the old light did exactly the same thing. They also added a no right turn sign. Don't know what the rationale was for it since it causes more traffic issues than it solves. My gut tells me someone with political connections in my neighborhood is behind it.

I made the turn and the officer motioned to me to pull over. I guess he missed the two cars in front of me that made the turn also. It was the usual routine. He took my info, walked back to his bike to finish up with another violator in front of me. As seems typical [edit: in my experience], he took his time to get back to me. He explained why he stopped me. Then his inner douche came out.

He asked sarcastically if I saw the sign. "You know. The one with the arrow and the red line through it. I know you saw it. You can't miss it." I politely said, "I see it every day. I just choose not to obey it." You know, free will and all. He said I had to obey simply because the sign said so. Who can argue with such sound logic? He asked me why I don't obey it and I basically said what I said here. He used "obey" quite a few times in our chat. Maybe my not "obeying" the sign got under his skin. Whatever the reason, his attitude and tone told me he enjoys being a dick, as most seem to do [edit: in my experience].

While I was signing my ticket, I politely asked why Sac PD isn't out here citing people (coming from the opposite direction) for blocking the intersection. It happens just about every time the light changes and poses a bigger problem for traffic flow than the right turn. He said, "Because I'm out here doing this. I can't be in two places at once." That is a pretty stupid response since he can see people blocking the intersection from literally the same spot he can see people making illegal right turns. They both happen in the same lane at the same spot. I don't get why he had to be such a cunt about something as minor as an illegal right turn.

Sorry you had that experience with that particular officer. My only observation would be to not tar all or most law enforcement with the same brush. I got pulled over by CHP for my failure to "obey" the posted speed limit on I-80, and that interaction was nothing but courteous and professional. Still cost me a couple hundred dollars, but no attitude or condescending bullshit like you got.

And the local cops I see taking their break at Starbucks most mornings on the way to work just want to talk Tacoma mods.

I just assume cops are just like the rest of humanity.
10% overly nice no matter what
    80% just normal everyday people
10% raging cunts/cock suckers no matter what

    That totally sucks balls.

I've been super lucky. I had one officer with a shitty day who took it out on me, but otherwise it's been all business. Hell, my last encounter about two years ago was South Bound on San Tomas in Santa Clara. I got pulled over for car pool lane violation. The cop was so friggin' friendly I almost felt good about getting a ticket....a totally bullshit ticket at that.

I tried not to paint with broad strokes. I've never had an issue with CHP or SOs. It's the PD officers I've encountered who seem to have a chip on their shoulders.

Based on my interactions and what I've personally witnessed with Sac PD, the percentages would be more like 10-10-80.
