My wife’s suggestion was “Hey can I please have the engagement ring back?”

 

I think thats too polite. I want this to be more of a demand disguised as a request.

 

Hmmm. Tough one. I also wouldn’t tire off the request right away because that gives her easy potential to ignore it. Be like “I have a quick question for you” or something. Once she responds, respond back quickly so you know she has her phone handy.

 

Just say, I think it's been long enough that any animosity should be gone, so now would be a great time to return the ring without any ill will.

I wouldn't say "do you mind" kind of gives her an option. maybe something more like, " I was hoping I could" or "I would like to" or something of the like
